Silke Falle reached up and set the metronome to swinging.
Tick-tock, tick-tock, it counted out the beats.
She took up her bow, fingered the cello's strings, and began to play.
The music was Pachbel's Canon in D. A wonderful piece of music to listen
unless you were playing the cello. Then it was, D-A-B-F#-G-D-G-A...
fifty-eight times if you happened to be keeping count.
Silke played and let the music flow. She was average in height with long
fair blonde hair and blue eyes. Determined to be flawless in her playing,
Silke practiced for a few hours every day. Practice makes perfect. She
was young, done with the Clearmont Academy and looking forward to a
career as a musician. Or a rock guitarist. She wasn't sure.
Silke Falle could have been first violin. She had the skills and the
musicial ability for that demanding chair. But the demands of her secret
life as 'Caterwaul' of the Crusaders made attending the frequent practice
sessions almost impossible. What she really wanted to do is play lead guitar
in one of New York's up-and-coming alternative rock bands. Again, she would
be unable to promise to be available for the nightly performances that were
needed to become a success. Besides, her parents would have thrown a fit
if their daughter gave up her classical training to be one of those...
common musicians.
Silke Falle's father was a world-famous conductor; her mother was one of
the best-known violinist in the world. They started in Munich and moved
to New York along with their young daughter to take over an internationally
known orchestra. A few years ago, they retired to Phoenix, leaving the
orchestra in the hands of their personally chosen successor. Siegfried Falle
now works with the Scottsdale Orchestra, conducting and teaching. Hanne Falle
performs with a string quartet, recording and performing in Arizona. And
their daughter, chose the double bass as her instrument, hoping her parents
would see her struggling with the instrument and relent.
Silke was not sure when she learned that her playing could also cause
damage to others. She was lucky enough to join up with the Crusaders and
help them in their fights. But she has learned to be careful with her
powers lest they hurt someone else. Her parents are unaware that she is
involved with other superheros.
She pulled her bow across the strings to finish the piece of music. Then
Silke reached up and stopped the metronome.
