Werner grew up on a fuel processing station on a corporate world deep in EA space. He skated through compulsory education provided by the station administration, be was far more interested in playing grav-ball. He was not, however good enough to be recruited for any professional team, the job for which he prepared himself all his life. Having no other options he joined up with the Earth Alliance Army.
Werner was posted to a joint EA/Shoomari peacekeeping mission. There was a world where the local population of Helga 3, old first wave colonists, were engaged in a feud with a neighboring Shoomari colony over system resources. Here he preformed well, if not outstandingly, until about 7 years into his service. He happened upon Major Hartwell Zumaki, the base commander, arming the local terrorists. Werner had worked in combined arms missions with Shoomari troops and had even made friends with some of them. Mjr. Zumaki tried to play a humans first tactic to sway Werner. This was the worst tactic to try, Werner went along and kept detailed logs and worked with the Investigative forces to try and bring this down. Unfortunately the mission was too high profile and would have caused an interstellar incident, had it been found out. The EA could not let that happen. Werner was dismissed and given a 10,000 cr. severance package.
Werner slipped into a deep depression. His service record was sufficient to land him a job with Guarda Security, doing docks and locks inspections for several small stations and municipalities on the Bubastis side of the wormhole. Werner was convinced we was the best trained and most capable person in his squad, and he chafed under what he saw was their lack of attention to detail. He often was showed what his performance reviews called “an excess of initiative.” He was actively looking for corruption and sloth, this did not endear him to his immediate superior, Starla Singh, who as luck would have it, was corrupt.
Sgt. Singh was taking money from an outfit known as the Trigon Syndicate, and Werner was getting too close to her operation. She was not built for direct confrontation and that was just too messy for her, so she engineered an airlock ‘accident.’ Unfortunately she did not realize just how tough Werner was, he survived for just under a minute in an evacuated airlock with a faulty vac-suit. Werner was in the hospital for over a week and lost his left arm in the process. The resultant investigation was inconclusive but it was obvious to Werner that he was done.
It was in the six months of rehab and looking for new work that Stano Rivas, an old Army buddy, looked him up. He was the 1st officer on the salvage scow Deadalous. He was looking to take on a deck hand, and was wondering what Werner was up to. This was a great job, low pay, but no boss cramping his style and just hard work. Until Starla Singh got wind of him. She got a promotion and was now an officer, and Lt. Singh made life quite rough on the Deadalous. Long lines at reporting and inspections, and the ship’s record was peppered with small annoyances and red flags.
Getting fed up, and knowing he was the cause, Werner started looking at the help wanted ads. Some rich hot shot needed a pilot, Werner should be able to handle that, so long as the guy wasn’t an asshat. It looked like this guy was headed out to the other side of the wormhole. After a short and weird interview, he got hired. looks like Werner is headed for adventure in the Pharos Sector.
