Nicholas "Nick" Knight (Yeah, yeah, I know, but I couldn't resist the name for my ex-cop) was born and raised in the city of Los Angeles, California on the North American continent of the Earth Alliance homeworld.
When one is born there and doesn't want to get stepped on, he has to be extremely wealthy, a career criminal/gang banger, or a cop.
At the age of 18 Nick joined the LA Police Academy. On arriving home from his first day he found a note from his parents that said they were so embarrassed at his choice they had to leave town. He later heard through his contacts they had moved to live and work with the Phoenix branch of their group, the "Slug Throwers".
Early during his career, his girlfriend Jeanette, the raven-haired "love of his life", also decided she couldn't live with his being a cop. She dumped him for one of the minor regional lieutenants of the Mac20s named LaCroix.
Years later as a Sergeant, Nick was involved in a stakeout. Somehow, the second team got "made" by the Mac20s and, outnumbered and outgunned, died in a hail of bullets from automatic weapons. Nick was so angry at the slaughter of his friend and mentor that he went a little berserk and commandeered a grav flyer from a passing rich guy. Not really knowing how to fly it properly, the best he could do was give chase and eventually crash it into the getaway vehicle, killing all the occupants. As "punishment" for destroying some rich guy's flyer, Nick's Chief sent him back to the Academy for special training in Grav Flyers and, later, promoted him to Lieutenant. It wasn't until much later that Nick found out that his former Lieutenant was one of the Chief's cousins. He was quickly promoted to Detective not long after that.
A few years later, as a Detective, Nick was involved in an investigation that went a bit sideways. He bent his ingenuity six ways to Sunday trying to preserve the cover of an officer undercover in one of the more vicious gangs. As reward for his skillful handling of the situation, he was promoted to be the Chief's assistant.
Despite the promotions received from the Chief, Nick had to do something about the corruption he was exposed to from the Chief's office. Eventually the Commissioner prompted him to take the place of the Chief of Police that was caught one too many times with his hand in the cookie jar.
Nick did what he could to clean up his force, but was becoming disgusted with the rampant corruption he couldn't seem to stem.
Finally, he decided to see if it was cleaner out among the stars...
