Winston Graves
Standing nearly six feet tall and a trim 160 pounds, Winston has a sever profile with a narrow face and a rather beaky nose undercut by a well-trimmed mustache and very thick spectacles. He is in his late thirties and dresses on the conservative side.
Magically speaking, Winston’s talent lies in charms and illusions. After graduation from his advanced charms studies at Tyana, he applied for a position with the MLE, and proved to be a more than competent detective.
In the course of his job in Tyana he kept butting heads with Solomon Horst, a very gifted magical criminal who headed a gang calling themselves the Ring of Iron. They were (and are) bank robbers, drug runners and also trafficked in extortion and murder for hire. Their criminal enterprises kept the gang well funded, but Winston proved very diligent and capturing Horst became something of a mania for the young Detective Graves.
After six years on the MLE, Winston met a young graduate of Tyana the woman he would marry Sheila Kravitz who would be Sheila Graves in a years time. A mundane born woman from Queens, New York, she never really got the hold of Tyana … it was too strange for her, but they toughed it out for the three years.
The straw the broke the camels back was a show down with the Ring of Iron. Winston was able to sneak up to a set of cabins that the gang were using as a hide out and storehouse. Unfortunately, he was spotted before his backup could arrive. A mighty spell duel erupted and the cabins caught fire. Solomon Horst was finally able to affix Winston with the curse of gibberish [NB: I am thinking of this as a Major or Severe Transform that gives the target the physical transformation ‘Unintelligible’ rendering most of their spells with incantations unusable or very difficult], rendering him almost helpless. He was then affixed with the Azure Bonds and left in a burning cabin to die. Horst made his escape, but neither his gang nor most of their resources were as lucky.
Winston spent two months on medical leave with the healers to get the curse removed, and when he did, his wife begged him to move away and take a less dangerous job elsewhere. They decided to make the move to Nexus New York and use the money left over from his parents passing to open an investigation agency.
Winston and his wife live in the Nexus, in a small apartment above their office on Book Street. It is cramped, but clean and the office is nice and professional.
Important NPCs
Sheila Graves (Infrequent DNPC, normal with useful skills) – 29 years old, funny and energetic she is an average witch who attended Tyana about the same time as Dorian Montrose. Sheila, does the bookkeeping, and some practical thaumaturgy (something Winston has very little talent for) at the agency. While not a powerful witch, she does what she does (finding lost keys and other objects, mostly) well.
Solomon Horst (Infrequent Hunted) – Mid Fourties, cunning and devious he is trying to rebuild his criminal empire in New York, but in order to do this he may have to come to terms with the other large, supernatural criminal power player in NYC, Donato IlVope.
Daphne LaRoy (11- Contact, has significant contacts) – Daphne is a fence for stolen goods and an all around shady character, Winston helped her with some ‘goblin trouble’ a few months back so she is willing to pass him information if it won’t hurt her business too badly, he keeps her name out of any official reports he needs to make.
Gloria Brace, MLE (8- contact, has access to large, powerful institution) – Winston’s former boss at the MLE office in Tyana. She is still fond of Winston, and tries at every opportunity to get him to rejoin the force.
Michael Rourke (11- contact) – Peter is an old school friend of Winston’s and a bartender at the Crossroads Tavern in the Bronx. He will pass any information on to Winston that he picks up, but he often needs money to pay off gambling debts.
Peter Van Stern (11- contact, has access to major institution) Peter is the night manager of the Sterncastle Hotel. There is a constant feud between Peter and his cousin Eric, so whenever the Sterncastle needs a detective he tries to get them to hire Winston. With Eric’s new position as the house detective, Peter can only pass information.
Sergeant Sean Malloy (11- contact, Good Relationship, access to major institutions) Sean is from a long like of wizards, not the major families, but a long line none the less. Sean is a regressive and has turned his back on the magical community, for the most part. There unfortunately the mundane ‘circus murders’ were, in fact, goblins killed in their war with the red court. He knew that if he brought in the MLE they would obliviate everyone and nothing would be done. He instead contacted Winston, and they worked together to catch some of the vampires involved, earning a promotion for Sean Malloy, he thinks he owes his new job to Winston, and will do what he can to help him out.
