In the Modern Arcana Chronicle, wizards tend to use one of four implements. These implements are Wands, Staves, Amulets and Rods.
By themselves, the implements have no power as they channel the wizards energy. A wizard may learn to use other implements, although most wizards tend to stick to their favorite. As stated in the Everyman skills entry, all characters receive one Implement Familiarity for free. You must be attuned to an implement, and this usually takes a few hours. If a wizard needs to use an unattuned implement, he will suffer a -2 penalty to all uses of the implement.
Implements are foci, usually OAF or OIF.

Naked Advantages through an Implement
It is possible to have a spell that provides a 'naked advantage' to your other spells. These spells must have limitations from the following list equal to the value of the advantage. The limitations are Concentration, Extra Time, Requires a Skill Roll and Extra END cost.
For example, Cedric has developed a Spell Splitting spell that cause the next spell he casts to strike a target multiple times. It is a 'naked advantage' of Autofire, 5 shots, worth a (+1/2) advantage. When building the spell, he needs limitations from the above list worth at least a (-1/2) value. He puts Concentration, 1/2 DCV for (-1/4) and Extra Time-Delayed Phase for (-1/4).
It is possible to have an enchanted implement that lends itself to specific 'naked advantages'. If a naked advantage is bought through an implement, it does not require an equal amount of limitations from the above list. In cases like this, an enchanted implement is more difficult to replace.
Wands favor enhancements to accuracy, distance, and Autofire. Staves are good for defensive enchantments like DCV levels and Combat Luck. Amulets are good for Area Effect, Indirect, and Usable on Others, while rods are good for Armor Piercing, Penetrating, and Variable Special Effects.
So a wand wielder like Cedric could get his wand enchanted with Range Penalty levels but if he wanted Armor Piercing through an implement, he would have to use a rod. Now Cedric can have a spell that provides the 'naked advantage' Armor Piercing, but it can not be from an enchanted wand.
