Goblins of Modern Arcana
In the Modern Arcana Chronicle, goblins are different from those found in D&D. They are traders and merchants, artificers and smiths. You can find them in every nexus and even in warded areas like Tyana. They deal in esoteric items such as Liquid Faith, Tears of Innocence and enchanted items. They are involved in a war with the Blood Court, but they still go about their business. They use the Portal Network but they also have a way to travel great distances with out being seen. It is also said they can travel to other worlds. No one knows where the goblins came from but they are not native to this world.
Now, this is what they do, but not who they are. Goblins seem to come in all shapes, sizes and colors. This does not mean that no two goblins look alike but they seem to have remarkable diversity of form.
In my studies, I have recorded 74 different phenotypes of goblins. The goblins refer to their phenotype as their tribe/clan. It is rare to find a Red-Ear goblin taller than four feet while a Yellow Tusk goblin averages about seven feet tall. Variations in height, skin color, weight, hair color, hair length, facial characteristics and skeletal structure are all keys to the clan of goblin. It is important to note that in some cases, the variations can be extremely subtle. The Kreshnacht clan and the Biesh clan have the same height, weight, skin color, hair color, and most facial characteristics. The difference is subtle. Kreshnacht have long ear lobes, sometimes reaching three inches while the Biesh have almost fin-like ears. Both clans will deal with you but the Biesh clan have the peculiar custom of sealing major deals with the exchange of bodily fluids.
- excerpt from Noted Clans of the Goblins by Theodosius Delacourt.
Goblins are master artificers. For those with the means, goblins will sell all manner of items. The important thing to remember is the enchanted items they sell do not last for long. A cloak of invisibility might last for fifteen to twenty minutes and then it would be a simple cloak. The famous goblin blades are not actually enchanted. They are forged and retain their edge. In the rare cases when a permanent item is made, goblins consider the ownership of the item to revert to the goblin that made it when the original purchaser dies. This sense of ownership extends to all aspects of goblin society. If the goblins believe something is theirs, they will act to protect it, even if the claim of ownership is tenuous.
