Karthis is the name for a new setting in the World of Rhiada that will be joining the Saturday night line up. It's also the name of the largest city in that setting. Located in the Neimocrands, a massif situated east (and slightly north) of the Sea of Endymion, the City of Karthis claims to be the most civilized place in Rhiada. Such claims aside, it is certainly one of the oldest cities in the world, and it enjoys one of the highest levels of technology and magic. Karthis differs from the Elocia setting in several ways. - Anachronism: Unlike many other fantasy settings, Karthis does not simulate a medieval or renaissance world. The attitudes and behaviors of Karthians can be remarkably modern. This includes a modern view on sexual and racial equality, a more subdued sense of class and entitlement and a secular outlook.
- Influences: Karthis draws inspiration from Clark Ashton Smith, the Lovecraft Circle, Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover, Robert E. Howard, Fritz Lieber and other pulp authors.
- Tone: The tone of the Karthis chronicle will focus more on smaller, more personal goals. Scenarios will be more gritty, with a good mixture of investigative and city adventures, world travel, and low fantasy dungeon delving.
- Cosmopolitan: Karthis sits at the center of a network of trade gates connecting disparate regions of the world. Characters can find themselves visiting exotic locals on all the continents and regions of the world. (Although the focus will always be on Karthis and the Neimocrands).
More to come.
