Background
The Octagon in Karthis was built during the days of the Scathovar domination. A massive stone edifice capable of holding 50,000 spectators, the 8-sided amphitheater has an arena floor 100 feet on a side (240 feet across). After the fall of the Scathovar, the Octagon was used for sporting events. It was during the Elven Principate that the Elathrima Games began. Competitors came to test their skills against the very best the Neimocrands had to offer, in challenges of sorcery and martial skill. The Elathrima Games are still popular in Karthis, running throughout the summer, with the best teams earning a fortune in prizes.
120 years ago, the Octagon introduced the Amateur games. These games are similar to the Elathrima, but the competitors are amateurs rather than professional. Teams compete for prizes ranging from 100 gp to 5,0000 gp. Competitions are held in three tiers. Novice competitors must have never competed in the games before. Intermediate competitors may have competed in the past, but must never have made it to the final round. Champion competitors are those who've been in the final two rounds in the past.
Cost of admission to the Novice games is 100 gp for a team of 5-7. The first round has 16 teams, the second 8 teams, the third 4 teams and the final round 2 teams. The winning team earns 500 gp. The two teams that win the third round earn 200 gp. The four teams that win the second round win 100 gp. A team wins only the highest award they've earned.
