Weavers Court
Situated between the Rivergate and the Merchant District, and between the Fisher Docks and Ostrakeidion, Weavers Court is a relatively flat area of town dominated by the large textile houses where workers gather to prepare and weave linen cloth. More than 30 textile houses can be found in the area and it is one of the mainstays of the Elocian economy, processing the rax flax that comes down the Inarion river into different types of cloth. About 20% of the working population of Karthis is engaged in the textile industry.
Weavers court is also the site of the many insula style apartments that house the workers in the mills. The district is solidly working class and proud of it. Most of the mill owners (the Cloth Factors) are Aikonians and most of the workers are Moravans. Most of the textile workers are members of the Chuch of Light. They exhibit that strange combination of economic liberalism (so many of them are barely surviving on their earnings), social conservatism (almost reactionary in many cases) and fierce individual pride so common in working class neighborhoods.
This neighborhood is not a tourist destination. Most of the tavernae are working class establishments filled with textile workers. Hard drinking is a common social event. The Black Rabbit criminal organization has its headquarters in this neighborhood.
Within the last few years a new drug has become popular in the neighborhood. Called blue, blue powder or faerie dust. It is an intense euphoric and hallucinogen produced somewhere in the elven quarter. It can be smoked or inhaled and is highly addictive. The Black Rabbits have tried unsuccessfully to keep it out (because they don't produce or control it), but a local gang called the Shrikes is buying it from the elves and distributing it.
The most notable site in the neighborhood is the House of the Frog. This urban villa was a combination textile mill, guild headquarters and private residence for the Kelainikon family. It was also a center of worship for the Cult of the Frog, a strange blend of hedonists and assassins, until that group was destroyed by The Pentiad, the last group to be named as Heroes of Elocia. In 1335 LR, Serg the Knife (one of the Pentiad) entered the House of the Frog late at night and tortured everyone in the house for information on hidden cult members. His allies in the Black Rabbits sealed the doors from the outside while he was working. The information he gathered led to hundred of arrests (including dozens of aristocrats) and executions. Shortly after this event, Serg the Knife disappeared. The House of the Frog has lain empty since that time. The locals claim that it is haunted by the restless spirits of those slain that night, including the Singing Ghost.
