Overview
In the year 2015, scientists discovered a pinprick wormhole in a cave in the mountains of Northern Utah. The government classified the discovery top secret and began a covert scientific mission to study it.
By 2025 researchers had discovered that the wormhole led to another world. By focusing energy into wormhole in controlled emissions, they discovered that they could enlarge it.
By 2030 they were had determined that the world on the other side seemed to lie in another universe, a universe where time flowed at a rate 99.53% as fast as our own world. Various exploratory missions had been sent through to map the immediate area. A base was established on the other side. They called it Fort Necessity.
The government allowed limited colonization at this point. Most colonists were those who knew about the project and wanted to live on the other side, but some corporations had been brought into the fold and were allowed to send wildcatters to the other side to assess the value of minerals in the vicinity.
In 2034 the secret was leaked to the public by intrepid reporters. Public demand forced the government to allow colonists to settle on the other side beginning in 2035. Because the wormhole becomes unstable when open for too long, or when the too much mass moves through it, a hard limit of 500 people and their equipment each month was allowed. Colonizing expeditions were limited to 100 people and their equipment. Each group paid a hefty fee and waited for the lottery. The Chinese fomented trouble on the international front until they were allowed to send their own group of 500 through. Afterwards, each month, one nation was allowed to send one group of 100.
For the next three years (2035 – 2037) groups came through, 500 per month like clockwork. On the homefront, the Chinese (and others) continually protested against sole control of the wormhole by the USA. Since it was physically located within the territory of the USA, there was no way that Washington would agree to any foreign control. Terrorists groups opposed any colonization of other worlds because they felt that humans had already despoiled one world.
In early 2038 tensions rose to fever pitch. The Chinese began conducting military exercises on the borders of US allies and put their armed forces on alert. A terrorist attack on the Utah military base killed seven people. An anti-colonization group calling itself Children of Earth took credit for the attack, demanding an end to all colonization through the wormhole. On May 23rd, a state of emergency was declared. The commander of the Earthside base ordered all his personnel and their families through the gate. Although there were 2500 military personnel and 500 civilians on base, only 400 civilians and 1200 military personnel made it through before the gate closed mid-transit. This had never occurred before.
Investigators discovered the wormhole, but found that it was miniscule less than 1/10th the size it had been when first discovered, but it was giving off 1000 times as much radiation. No one knows what this means, but the experts don’t think they could open from the Pandora side without years of concerted effort.
