The characters have graduated from Tyana Academy of Magic. In addition to a high school diploma (the mundane world accepts the Tyana Academy as an excellent private high school), each character has earned his or her Magical Adept General Education (M.A.G.E.) certificate, proclaiming them to be competent practical mages.
Over the summer, the characters have stayed in touch via the magebook device given to them by the Daedalus company in exchange for their help in testing the prototype. All of the characters have decided to pursue a mundane college degree from Columbia University or Barnard College. They have all taken rooms at the Ibis House, a residential facility in Morningside Park near the colleges.

Betty Remington found herself in a familiar situation. Despite having been accepted at Barnard College, despite having been awarded a grant to pay for her housing in Ibis House, her mundane parents kept vaccilating over whether they would allow her to go to New York City.
He close friends (Marcus Black, Cedric Delacourt, Gino DiCanzio, Crispin Mano and Jared Goth) went to the rescue. While everyone else waited in Charleston, at the train station, Jared rented a car, donned a chauffeur's uniform1 and went to talk to her father. He presented himself as a driver sent from Ibis House. One charm person spell later, and they had an hour to get out of town.
Betty wasn't the only one coming from South Carolina by train. Darius Bellamy (their old rival from school) and two of his siblings (Maximus and Cordelia) were also taking the train to Richmond so they could take the portal to New York City.
On the train, they met a trio of goblins who were selling patent medicine (alcohol and laudinum) to the mundanes. They also had a few magic potions for sale. They saw Cordelia looking through the merchandise.
While enjoying some pie and coffee, the characters felt an omnious lurch on the train. They tried to discover what it was to no avail.
Later, the characters come across Darius Bellamy in the bathroom of his car being menaced by a knife wielding goblin. They couldn't hear all the converation, but they did hear a few snatches of the goblin's words.
"...tried to compel him. And now he's missing .... doesn't show up ... cut you good."
Darius would not allow them to intervene, so they went to the dining car and found his older brother Max. Max seemed unsurprised that one of his siblings may have tried something like that. He said he would talk to them. When they came into the car, he did so. One of the characters noticed a man listening in on the conversation. The man went up and paid his bill and left. After getting a refill on coffee, the two younger Bellamy's gre so tired that they had to return to their compartment.
Cedric was trying to question porters as to the cause of the trouble earlier. He found out that the train must have hit something on the tracks, but that the lurch was only felt in part of the train. Whatever it was must have fallen on the tracks from the train.
While returning to his car, Cedric discovers that the door is locked. Since no one was around, he used his dimension step to pass through the door. At the other end, he sees a man (the man he noticed watching them earlier) coming back though the door. An unconscious Darius Bellamy is lying outside the car, just inside the railing. Cedric tries to punch the man, but gets knifed for his trouble. He stumbles back towards the dining car and get Max Bellamy.
Meanwhile, Betty and Marcus have come from the other direction, determined to find Cedric. They see the man dragging Cordelia next to her brother. A fight ensues. Despite being outnumbered by Max, Cedrid, Marcus and Betty, the man almost succeeds in killing the two younger Bellamy's. He throws Darius over the railing, but Marcus saves him with a floating disk that he sticks between the cars. In the end, they knock the man unconscious. Betty wants to get the porter, but Max Bellamy goes through his pockets and throws him off the train (not on the tracks).
Looking through the man's stuff later, they find that he's a rogue witch hunter. His family was killed by cultists when he was young. He witnessed it from hiding and saw everything. Since becoming an adult, he's been killing any non-humans and anyone he discovers is a mage.

The characters are drawn into a story involving gremlins who were destroying equipment and experiments in one of the science labs. They discovered an old, forgotten alchemy lab that they gremlins were using for a lair. They also discovered that one of the mundane professors had accidentally gained access to the lab. He took an alchemy manual and an alchemy stone and set up an experiment in a private warehouse. He developed a formula for creating giant grains. Insects and rats that ate the grain were mutated, growing to unusual size.
The professor also mutated himself. The characters defeated him and turned him over to magical law enforcement.
