The Niemocrands
North of Chryseon sits the massive geological structure known as the Niemocrands. A massif that rises to heights of 12,000 feet above the surrounding plains, stretching for more 300 miles east to west and almost as far north to south. Several plateaus are found on the southern face, but hanging valleys and narrow canyons predominate on the western, eastern and northern faces.
The Niemocrands is dominated by the Republic of Karthis, a city-state ruled from Karthis City (population 1,000,000). The Republic of Karthis is famous for its ancient ruins*, its powerful wizards and psions and its trade gates that allow it to dominate long distance trade around the world.
The Niemocrands is riddled with tunnels and caverns, many of which contain connections to the Umbra, the Darker regions of Faerie and the Elemential Maelstrom. The Omphalos, the mystical heart of Rhiada, lies beneath the Niemocrands. This powerful site is guarded by the Omphalian Guard, which answers to Karthis.
Karthis exists in a perpetual state of war with the Lupari who control the western ends of the Niemocrands. They also have strife with the frost giants of the upper peaks and the dragons of the upper vales. They maintain fairly good relations with Chryseon because of the large amount of trade between them. The Sugda of the plains have close ties to Karthis, but the Janthy horde has attempted to destroy Astwan several times. This city of 15,000 inhabitants sits on the shores of Lake Mnemoth and control access to the long stair leading up to the plateaus controlled by Karthis. Astwan is part of the Karthian Republic.
The Krona Pass allows merchants to travel north to the lands of the Vanir. This pass has been closed since 1317 LT.
*In increasing order of antiquity, the ruins of Karthis are Ilfaren, Scathovar, Dweirish and some race/culture that is lost to history.
