Story Begins: Freeday, 14th of Coldeven, 591 CY
Protagonists
Aerwin
Duncan of Stoink

Overview
The protagonists were hired by Garrick the Brewer, the only commercial brewer in Severan, to clear his storehouse of rats, which had become such a problem that his workers were refusing to enter the building, one of their number having been stripped to the bone by rats in a scant handful of minutes, and one doughty cat named Tressa Whitesocks having entered the structure through no desire of her own, and having failed to return. A few moments into their task, they discovered several bags of barley, thoroughly gnawed lying next to a collapsed pallet. Spilling forth, several swarms of rats assaulted the valorous vermin slayers, but fell before them in scores.
In the darkened shadows of the rafters, several rats of unusual size lurked. Upon the destruction of the swarms, these giant rats scurried down to the floor level and used the cover of pallets to approach within striking distance of their human foes. Once they had defeated these last verminous skulkers, the protagonists proceeded to show their dead bodies to the Brewmaster, who doubled his promised reward to 100 silver crowns and generously allowed his workers a chance to earn some compensation in exchange for giving up their Freeday.
The following day, while enjoying the first market day of the year not undermined by cold, rain or unpleasant weather, they came upon Liam the Bear Dancer leading his newest dancer down the street in a display of ursine frivolity to the delight of everyone in the crowd, save for one Bruno (hereafter to be known as Bruno Bearbait) who for reasons unknown to saner minds decided to poke the dancing bear with a stick, prompting a fast and bloody retort. With clever use of spellcraft, and Liam's undoubtedly earnest fluting, the bear's well deserved rage was sated without damage to anyone aside from Bruno. Through quick thinking and thaumaturgy, the protagonists were even able to save the impulsive, but likely no wiser, drunkard from the well nigh mortal results of the bear's retaliation.
Liam invited the protagonists to the Foaming Mug, where he paid for many libations in honor of those who had saved his bear from what would certainly have been a fatal confrontation with the town guard. Amongst the many well wishers in the crowded taproom was Alben Mercer, youngest son of the Mercer family, owners of one of two general mercantile establishments in Severan. Having been impressed by the abilities the protagonists had shown in the streets, young Alben offered them a commission to deliver a secret missive and token of his affection to a girl who had stolen his heart, Cora, the only daughter of the Butcher of Charwood Glen. Alben had been forbidden further contact with Cora, his prior interaction having resulted in a severe beating at the hands of her brothers. Her family disapproved of their relationship due to the fervor of their own Pholtan beliefs conflicting with the Mercer's moderate Zilchan faith. For this reason, he suggested a bit of subterfuge, involving them hiring on as mercenary guards for the next merchant train to Charwood Glen.
Setting out on the 16th of Coldeven, having been hired by the Mercers, the characters accompanied three wagons on the Gamboge Trail towards Charwood Glen. Encounters with axebeaks, zombies and aged trees uprooted by inclement weather and blocking the path, the train reached the village after dusk in the midst of a downpour. Some set up camp with the Mercers, while others sought the smoky comfort of the common room at the Charwood Inn.
