A week later, the party returns to Charwood Glen, quietly meeting with Cora and escorting her back to meet with her boyfriend. They were last seen, headed to Midmeadow to be married.
Six weeks past. It was now spring. Growfest came and went. Severan’s Mills held their annual Growfest Festival. It was the time when everyone got to tap the new beer and mead being brewed. The Growfest this year was marred by a brawl between the Midway Meadery and the Trimbler Vinters.
Around noon, Aerwyn was called up to the Severan Manor house by the Lady Florana. She arrived to find a crowd of villagers and estate servants trying to find out what is going on.
Walking inside, she found the rest of the party listening to Lady Florana. Lady Florana told us that Lord Severan was returning in a processional when they were suddenly attacked by goblin raiders. Lord Severan retreated to Dragonhead Manor and sent a rider to get help. Lady Florana would be sending two priests of Heironeous – Justin and Calistan – to render aid and she would like the party to escort them to Dragonhead Manor.
The party left the manor house within the hour. By horseback, it would take about two hours to get to Dragonhead Manor.
Dragonhead Manor was a fortified manor house, surrounded by an earthen wall and raised on a low man-made hill. The estate was known for its dairy products, especially its cheese. The party rode up to the manor house, past armed and alert herdsman, and stopped at the door. Inside, the party found Lord Severan wounded with two other injured men. A few more men have died from their injuries. Trying to take care of the injuries was Dame _______. She told us that Lord Severan sent two men out to track the goblins.
While Justin and Calistan healed the injured, the party questioned Lord Darrick Severan. (?) He was riding past Chestnut Freehold when his group was ambushed. He then offered the party a task – to go out and help the two men tracking the goblins. It was strange that the goblins would be out in daylight. He was willing to pay us a bounty for each goblin killed – 3 sp per hand or 10 sp for both hands.
Leaving the horses at Dragonhead Manor, the party proceeded on foot to Chestnut Freehold. It was already late afternoon when they arrived at the place. Chestnut Freehold was a small place, surrounded by copses of chestnut trees and pig sties. The house was tumbled down and there were bodies lying around. The bodies were goblins which someone identified as belonging to the Blood Drinker Clan. Goblin footprints led off into the forest.
Following the footprints, Aerwyn found an ancient sign saying, “Hickory House”. She told the others that Hickory House was once a hunting lodge before a plague hit some 50 years ago. The tracks seemed to heading toward the place.
A bit further along, Sir Thabo spotted that the party had picked up another group of zombies. The party paused long enough to put the walking dead down.
Picking up the trail again, the party found a dead horse from one of the two men that Lord Severan had sent out.
An hour later, the sun was about to set. Suddenly, the party came across a small group of goblins, one of them mounted on a worg. There was an exchange of arrows, killing most of the goblins and driving off the goblin mounted on his worg.
The party needed a place to hide out in. It was decided that they would go around to see if Hickory House might be a safe spot to make camp for the night. Already, there were howling of worgs in the distance. The party could see the light of the goblins’ campfires.
Coming up to the place, the party could see Hickory House was a massive log structure, two stories tall with a cellar. The gardens were completely overgrown. They slipped through the rotting garden gate and were attacked by a whipweed plant. Wolfram and Sir Thabo were grabbed by the plant. The party fought quietly, trying to free those entangled and avoiding noise that would bring the goblin hordes down on them.
The plant finally dropped and the party stole into the Great Hall of the former hunting lodge to camp.
