(Aerwyn reporting)
Picking up where we left off – when I (Aerwyn) noticed what was going on – I turned back and started to run towards the stairs to the keep. Wolfram got slammed and dropped. Thabo arrived a second later and killed his orc. Duncan ran up and saved Wolfram while we killed the other orc.
Before entering the keep itself, we decided to search out the other tower in the Motte Severan. Its door, we discovered, was sealed by a Giant Trap Spider so Wolfram decided to entice it out. When it came out to see who was knocking – we killed it.
The lair was dry, covered in soft webbing and safe from the forces in the keep. We decided to rest there and left Wolfram to keep watch. While we were resting, 4 more orcs and several humans came out of the keep, gathered up the livestock and herded them into the copse of trees. A little while later, an orge came out with several prisoners and had them clean up any signs of the fight and the herd.
Rested, we entered the keep the next morning. The ground floor was clear but following the orge’s footprints, we crept into the underground works. Just beyond the old kitchens, we found Grog the orge.
In a short but nasty fight, we put an end to Grog. In an adjoining room, we found the prisoners – two merchants from Midmeadow and a gnome from the Flinty Hills. We escorted them into the other tower and left them there to recover. They told us that the brigands had tortured them for information about themselves and their merchant company before turning them over to Grog. Their leader was a handsome but vain man named Lezari. He was tall black-haired man with a short beard. They also described the robed men we saw earlier as bearing holy symbols of Iuz.
Back in the depths of the keep, we decided to go the other way from the kitchen, through an archway into a hallway with cells. Duncan looked into one of the cells. A pair of zombies looked back. We had to destroy about ten zombies. Each had a brand of an iron skull. At the end of the hallway was a torture chamber. There did not seem to be any way out so we made an careful examination of the room.
Hidden inside one of the two stone pillars in the room was a shaft with iron rungs. We descended the shaft to find ourselves in a rammed earth tunnel deep below the old castle. Following the tunnel we came out in a burial niche – part of an ancient catacombs. While the niche had no bodies, as we threaded our way deeper into the catacombs, we found evidence that bodies had been placed in the burial niches – but now, the burials had been disturbed and the bones shattered. As we turned a corner, ghouls jumped out and attacked. We cut them down. Each of the ghouls were bearing a symbol of Iuz.
The ghouls had left a tunnel which opened up into another rammed earth tunnel. When we came to a ‘T’ intersection, we followed the tunnel that led to stairs going down and into a hallway of worked stone with doors. One of the doors opened to a large room with resting warriors. Before they could raise the alarm – we took them down.
At the end of the hallway, we ended up in another room. The warriors and cultists were ready for us and had taken cover behind crates and barrels. Thabo charged the line, jumping over the obstacles and cutting down the warrior there with the crossbow. Wolfram followed, attacking the cleric who was trying to get a spell off.
In adjoining room, we could see a handsome, black-haired man having his armor fitted by two scantly clad women. While we are finishing our fight with the cultists – the man comes out. This must be Lezari, the second man we’re looking for, Thabo charges the man. Lozary defends himself but is no match for our maddened paladin.
In the adjoining room, along with the two scantly-clad women, we find a fully equipped temple of Iuz. From the wall-paintings, the mosaics, and the furnishings, it was not a recent addition to the castle complex.
While Saphie and I were assuring the young women that they would be returned to their local farms, the others were going through Lozary’s correspondence. There were letters from someone who signed only with an ‘M’. ‘M’ must be the mysterious third agent we are looking for.
