(Aerwyn reporting)
In going through Lozary’s journal and discussing it with the others, we could think of one possible assessor named ‘M’, a gentleman known as Magnus Ficius.
Our rest concluded, we leave our hiding spot and went left into a long rough cut tunnel, supported by mining timbers. Fifty feet in, the tunnel passed by a larger room. In the middle of the room was a herd of goats and sheep and they were nervous because someone had been slaughtering animals in the same room. There was one exit from the room sealed with a firmly-fitted door. In the door’s lintel, there were runes carved into the wood. These were magical runes, carved by the Sueloise wizard that had helped Lozary. They kept the next room cold.
The timbered tunnel continued past the animal room, continued some 300 feet before it started to rise slowly. There was an alcove with a cranking mechanism. Wolfram cranked for some time but nothing happened other than a muffled thump. Following another 100’ of tunnel, we came to a door to the outside, hidden in a copse of woods. This is how the orcs and herdsmen had taken the animals to the room below.
Leaving the sun-dappled woods behind, we returned to our hiding spot and began to explore towards the right. We opened a door, entering a stone walled rectangular room. There were two hallways leading out of the room. However, we would have to defeat an orc leader and his two bodyguards first. After the fight, Thabo removed plate armor from the orc leader. They had been carrying sacks of junk gold, silver and brass. One hallway led back to a concealed door into the keep. The other hallway featured four more orcs. After the orcs had been disposed off, we came to a stairway leading further down.
At the bottom of the stairs, there was water on the slightly slanted floor. I (Aerwyn) dropped a copper coin into the water, hoping to find out how deep the water was. Suddenly, a Greyfish – a large crayfish – rose out of the water and grabbed me. Everyone else unloaded on the beast as I tried to struggle out of it’s claws. When the thing was finally dead, we decided that we had seen everything in the old keep and returned to our hiding spot. Dinner was roasted shellfish.
The next morning, we took the herd back to Trembly. It took two days. The merchants we rescued and the two girls accompanied us to Trembly.
In Trembly, Dame Bronwyn is happy to have recovered the animals but somewhat disappointed that we didn’t find out who the Grey Fox was. In town, Duncan makes some illustrations of the men that we’ve captured or killed. He then posted them around town, asking questions. Saphie lets slip that we have information on the Grey Fox and we would be heading to the Hospitalry the next day.
So it was expected that we would ambushed on the way. Six masked horsemen appeared on the road before us, including a leader with a Grey Fox mask. All were armored except their wizard and they began to ride us down.
Ir was a short but ugly melee – I don’t remember much because I was dropped – but in the end we managed to capture the Grey Fox, her wizard (and nephew) and 2 men-at-arms. I was healed and our prisoners were placed on horseback for their return to the reeve.
Back in Trembly, the reeve was very pleased to finally that the Grey Fox’s reign of banditry was over. Dame Griselda was bound over for trial in Midmeadow. We also told Dame Bronwyn about the hidden temple of Iuz than we had found, the death of Lozary and the journals we had found. We described the letter from ‘M’ and our suspicions about Magnus Ficius, the assessor.
Dame Bronwyn told us that we would need more evidence of the guilt of the assessor – he was a royal official. He had many estates across the domain of Severan – but his house was in Severan’s Mill.
