Getting up a few days later, the group looked out from their quarters in the Foundry Tavern. The skies were overcast and gloomy. Down by the front gate to Torch, a group of horsemen were about to enter the community. A few minutes later, Dolga Freddart came in the tavern to warn the group that a Technic League sub-captain and his troop had come to Torch. She had sent word to Father Joram, the priest of Brigh, to hide Meyanda and others to cover any technology. Now, she advised Khonnir Bane to turn off the power relay and to go down and hide the underwater entrance to the reactor underneath Torch. It would be bad for Torch if the Technic League ever found out what Black Hill was hiding.
A moment after Dolga left, a young kid wandered into the tavern with a note for Astrovel. The note was from Sanvil Trett to the sub-captain Astrohech, asking him to send word via the kid where Trett was supposed to meet him - Trett had news of a recent discovery that the Technic League would definitely be interested in. Quincy immediately suggested sending the kid back to Trett with a message that the sub-captain would meet Trett outside of Torch in a glade of trees along the Crowfeather Creek.
Lying in ambush, the group watched Sanvil Trett and eight of his thugs walk down the creek trail. Then they attacked. Sanvil spent most of his time, trying to deal with the alchemist's flames as his thugs went down. When it was all over - Grigorio summoned rats to dispose of the bodies. The Technic League spy and his thugs simply walked out of town and disappeared.
Back at the Foundry Tavern, Quincy had been making progress in reading Dobain's notes. While a lot of the journal was soaked in blood, the group was able to determine that there were strange things going on at Dig 16. With the sub-captain still in Torch, it was decided to go out to the Pathfinder site and find out.
Dig 16 was in a narrow canyon with high soft sandstone walls. The canyon widened at one point to reveal a campsite with gear, tents and tables. It had been completely trashed. Bits and pieces of equipment littered the ground. The group went closer to have better look. The goblins that were lying in wait, opened with thrown alchemist fire and sent their rat-dogs to attack. The goblin chief yelled and released his own dogs.
The group fought back, finally killing all the goblins and their dogs. Then the group searched the area. The tunnel that the initial dwarven prospectors had dug was firmly shored up with stout mine timbers. Unlike the rest of the camp - there was no litter in the tunnel.
Walking down the tunnel, at the point where the light from the outside failed - there were bones on the ground - animal bones and mostly goblin bones. Alerted, the group saw 3 floating creatures flying at them, tendrils waving. Niferia threw a Daylight spell that dazzled them and then the group killed them.
Following the tunnel another 60 feet, it ended in a skymetal wall. Panels had been pried from their ribs to leave an opening. The opening revealed a short passage over a deep crevasse of tubes, pipes, wiring and ductwork. On the other side was a wall. Above the group, 20' high, hung a ceiling with open lockers and an open door. Across the 20' space was another wall with regular ribs running across it. Fixtures were mounted on that wall. Examining the wall they were standing on showed it was mostly clear except for a flat structure mounted on four extensions from the wall. At the bottom of the room was an tangled mess of gear, computers, junk and stuff and another open doorway.
