It was getting late when we entered Severan's Mill. The village had been almost completely destroyed. Our plan was still to enter Severan House by the external entrance to the root cellar. But first, we needed to talk to the people in the village and find out what caused the massive destruction. As we came in from the north side, we passed a pig farm that had escaped the flames. The farmer was organizing the relief efforts. Refugees from the village were taking shelter in the barn and the lean-tos outside in the fields.
Saphie talked to a young person that she knew. A group of Pholtan worshippers had broken into the temple of Hieroneous and set it on fire. Blue demons had assaulted the temple of Boery, killing the priestess and taking the orphans. There were rumors of bandits on the western end of the village - Lord Severan had rode out to deal with the problem. Lady Severan and her men had helped by gathering up the dead. But she had taken the bodies to Severan House.
Going over the western end of Severan's Mill, we learned that Lord Severan had captured six bandits and their leader. But from their description, the bandits were the reeve and her men. Lord Severan had taken his prisoners up to Severan House.
We headed up to Severan House. Sneaking onto the grounds, we captured two guards. Taking them into the gardener's shack, Saphie questioned one of them. The captured guard was shocked that Lord Severan was taking a representive of the crown prisoner and promised to be helpful. He told us that the reeve and her men had been taken into the Great Hall.
It was easy to sneak into the root cellar. The root cellar didn't hold anything but Wolfram found a secret door. That door led into a brick floored, wooden walled hallway. There were two doors and a door at the end. When Gideon opened one of the doors, he found 4 men in leather and a priest of Iuz. Gideon changed into a direwolf and jumped into the fray. Behind Aerwyn who was still in the hallway, the other door opened and more cultists of Iuz came out. We killed the last of them before he could reach the door at the end of the narrow hallway.
Opening the door at the end, a Glyph of Death went off. We found ourselves in a complete temple to Iuz. There were more cultists, a high priest of the Iuz and Lady Severan. On the altar, the priest of Heironeous was about to be sacrificed. Gideon and Sir Thabo charged. The cultists and the high priest went down fairly quickly but Lady Severan escaped into a cage used to hold prisoners. Protected from attacks, she threw down spells on us. Wolfram worked feverishly to unlock the cage while Saphie and Aerwyn returned spell after spell. Once the door was open, Sir Thabo finished her off.
On the other side of the temple was another hallway. It ended in a large room with a spiral stairway leading up into the house. Here, we found Melanthus, Lord Dominic and six of the guards from Lady Severan. Melanthus opened by throwing 'Fear' on us. Sir Thabo and Aerwyn turned and ran. Duncan, Gideon and Saphie make short work of the guards. Sir Thabo recovered quickly and returned to the fight while Aerwyn kept running. Lord Dominic was critically injured but Melanthus healed him to full. Saphie finally drops Dominic. Under constant attacks from Sir Thabo, Melanthus drops his glamor, revealing himself to be a incubus. Aerwyn finally stopped running in fear and began running back. She returned just in time to see Melanthus drop. Dominic is stablized in order that he may stand trial.
Now, we went up the spiral stairway to Severan House. The stairway ended in a study. In the study was Lord Severan and a pet lion. He shouted for his guards and went to attack. As he fought, he confessed he was trying to take down the cult of Iuz - but he did it by assisting White-Eyed Callie who promised her aid. He bought her help by giving her children from the village. He had to do the things he had to do - there was no other way. He even had to kill the reeve - to take down the cult. Sir Thabo finally finished him off.
In an adjoining room, we find the bodies of the reeve's men. Luckily, Dame Bronwyn had managed to stablize herself. Gideon gives her a goodberry to help heal her.
Over the next few weeks, Dominic and Carla were sent to two different abbeys - to be watched over and broken of their evil ways. Dame Bronwyn becomes the new lord of Severan's Mill and receives the title, Lady of Severan. Not only had Severan's Mill nearly been destroyed - they lost over a hundred villagers. Their bodies had been found next to the temple of Iuz, probably to be raised as undead.
As thanks, we get the favorable recognition of the Nyrond Intelligent Service. And Lady Bronwyn gave us the title to a townhouse in Midmeadow.
