In AD&D (1978), Silence is a 2nd level Cleric spell. My comments in [ ].
Silence, 15' radius (Alteration)
Range 12" [Measurements in inches, how very wargame like!]
Casting Time: 5 segments [Segments - what's that?]
Duration: 2 rounds/level
Saving Throw: None [But see below]
Area of Effect: 30' diameter sphere
Upon casting this spell, complete silence in the area of effect.
This spell can be cast into the air or upon an object. The spell can be cast on a creature, and the effect will then radiate from the creature and move as it moves. If the creature is unwilling, it saves against the spell, and if the saving throw is made, the spell effect locates about one foot behind the target creature. [Is this one foot in our scale (like the 12" range of the spell) or one foot in game scale? In any case, it appears that the creature can shake off the spell and leave it behind if the saving throw is made.]
In AD&D 2nd edition (1989), the text for the spell is almost the same. Range is now 120 yards. The spell can be cast in the air or upon an object, but the effect is stationary unless cast on an mobile object or creature. The spell can be centered upon a creature, and the effect then radiates from the creature and moves as it moves. The wording about an unwilling creature is the same as the earlier edition but makes it clear that the spell is centered a in-game foot behind the target creature.
Going back even further - Silence is in the Expert Rules of OD&D (1974-1981). It is a 2nd level Cleric spell:
Silence 15' Radius
Range 180'
Duration 12 turns
This spell will make a 30' diameter totally silent. ... This spell does not prevent a person within the area from hearing noises made outside the area. [Interesting!] If cast upon a person, the victim must save vs Spells or the spell effect will move with him! If the saving throw is successful, the spell will remain in the area in which it was cast, and the victim may move out of the area.
