We had decided to travel to the Sword Coast to do more research on the Red Wizards and the Doom Vault. Sunny was looking forward to chilling on the deck of a ship sailing to the north but it was determined that using Teleportation Circles would cost less and be faster. Sunny was introduced to someone that could teach her the teleportation circle in Balder’s Gate and everyone else got busy with getting ready for the trip.
Leaving Port Nyranzaru around noon, we arrived in the courtyard of the Elfsong Tavern in Balder’s Gate in the mid-morning. On the recommendations of the other party members, Sunny also took rooms at the Elfsong Tavern – it would give her a place to stay while we researched and studied.
Days and weeks passed. Sunny was only able to turn up information that about 60 years ago, the Red Wizards made a play for the Sword Coast, striking from a hidden fortress called the Bloodgate Keep deep in the mines near Daggerford. They were thwarted by a group of adventurers calling themselves the Five Against Darkness.
Randall and Kelric learned that the Doom Vault was a secret set of sites scattered across Thay, all guarded by various powerful beings and linked by a set of keyed teleportation portals. Elathrion turned up more information on the Red Wizards’ attack on the Sword Coast including that the last survivor of the Five Against Darkness, a cleric of the Seldrine named S. Moonmeadow(?) still lived in the woods near Daggerford.
It was a month after we arrived in Balder’s Gate. We were at dinner, discussing what we had found out that day when the invisible stalkers attacked. Kelric’s Lantern of Revealing made the elemental beings visible to us which caused them to flee. That night, they returned, attacking some in the party in their rooms. Sunny was able to draw a magical circle to trap them. Asking one of them who sent them gave up the answer that Velindra Shadowmantle sent them.
In the succeeding days and nights, the magical attacks continued that ceased when everyone bought an amulet of non-detection or had the spell cast on them. Velindra was becoming a problem.
We decided to go talk to this elf in Daggerford. Sunny was tasked with learning another teleportation circle. In the morning, she cast the spell and we ended up in front of the Moonmeadow estate just outside of Daggerford. Talking to the owner of the estate, an elderly elf, we were able to have a sending sent to S. Moonmeadow(?) who agreed to join us for breakfast the next day.
At the breakfast table the next morning, we asked about Bloodgate Keep and the Thayans. She replied that the Five Against Darkness had help – a Red Wizard that was seeking power and revenge against Szass Tam and his liches. Sireynas(?) had her own route to immortality, one that did not rely on becoming a lich in service of Szass Tam. S. Moonmeadow sent off a message and an hour later, a bald woman, dressed in red with four living guards, appeared in the teleport circle.
After listening to our plans, Sireynas(?) agreed to help. She would supply us with a base in Bezantur and access to one of the Vaults – the Abyssal Prisons. Bezantur was a major port city in Thay with a 140,000 people. It was a major trading center and the commercial hub of Thay. That being said, Sunny would still stand out in the population, being a Tabaxi. Sunny put on her hat of disguise and appeared to be a female Red Wizard. With that problem solved, we teleported to her home in Thay.
To get into the Abyssal Prisons, we would have to pass through the Maze of Undoing. Once in the Vault, we could move around by taking white keys from the more important people in the Vault. To move to the next Vault, we would have to seize the black key from the Vampire overseeing the Abyssal Prisons.
We stepped into the Maze of Undoing. The walls are grey and don’t take any marks. By carefully traveling along – sometimes on the sides of walls, sometimes on the 30 foot ceilings, we made it to the center of the maze. There was a obese demon here, bound by Szass Tam to serve as guardian. He tells us to take the white key from his chest and set him free. We kill him, remove the key and let him flee to the Abyss.
While taking a short rest and trying to heal people, Sunny is attacked by an invisible osquip. Kelric opens his Lantern of Revealing, showing us that the room is filled with the tiny demons. The slaughter of creatures from the Abyss was soon over.
In a neighboring room, filled with black mold and rotting furniture, we are challenged by a ghost. He wanted revenge on the Allies of the Red Wizards. We quickly convince him that we were not in fact, allies of the Red Wizards. He is bound here until he gets revenge on a wizard named Teffiry(?) in particular. We told him that if we come across this fellow, we would bring him here. Then he gave us some more advice that might help us.
We continued to a corridor of cells, each occupied with demons. The jailer appeared and demanded to know who sent us. We cut him down to stop the flow of questions and obscenities.
