Maximillian 'Max' Dragonard Background
1) Character's role in magical society - Being a youth of 18 years, Max has yet to settle on his "life's career".
2) Character's role in mundane society - Max has taken it on himself to be a defender of the mundane and those of little strength. Though not consciously, he seems to be fitting himself into a mold that is a cross between Bruce Wayne and Harry Dresden.
3) Character's combat abilities - Max's powers center around Air Magic.
4) Character's non-combat abilities - Max has some limited access to a few old family friends for information, but nothing reliable. They are, after all, his grandfather's friends, not his. Also, they seem to be somewhat nervous in Max's presence considering what happened to his parents and grandfather.
5) Major Complications - Max "inherited" a ring from his grandfather that is being hunted for by a deranged cult of alchemists. His grandfather, Morgan Dragonard, survived an attack by persons unknown, but is now non compos mentis. Max is now his guardian. Max is also known to be overconfident.
Max is a young wizard of 18 years.
Due to his family's wealth and standing in the community Max was trained in Tyana Academy, the best wizard school in North America.
His father was murdered by forces unknown 9 years ago and his mother suffered the same fate 6 years ago. His paternal grandfather, Morgan Dragonard, raised him from that point on. Max knows nothing of his paternal grandmother, Alicia, other than that she disappeared over 20 years ago and nobody in the family would discuss her. Max's paternal great-grandparents were muggles and were not, and did not want to be, part of the Dragonard family life. They considered the wizarding lifestyle to be too disruptive and dangerous. This makes him a Mageblood with ancestors (old & recent) from Old Blood lines.
Three years ago Max's grandfather, Morgan, survived a severe attack from forces unknown. Unfortunately, though alive, Morgan is now non compos mentis. He now lives in the family ancestral mansion with Max and Mathilda, the housekeeper. To help Mathilda keep up with her work, Max uses Hopsing's Laundry.
It seems that Morgan was in China during the Boxer Rebellion. While there he found and brought home a 9" Chinese magical medallion which appears to be part of a larger object.
Max is capable of using a wand as a focus like most other wizards, but uses a ring that he was given by his grandfather instead. It is a heavy silver ring with a flat black stone embedded in it. The stone is inset with numerous tiny stones of various colors and shapes in a random-looking pattern. Unknown to Max, this ring is being desperately sought after by a cult of deranged alchemists. This cult will kill anyone to get the ring, but need to know what Max knows about it and need to know if the sequence or pattern of the small stones has been altered. The pattern is the blueprint to the formula for a long lost elixir. Max thinks he is clever by pretending to use a wand as a focus in the same hand as he wears the ring on. This way, if he's ever "disarmed" by someone taking the wand, he still has his actual focus.
Max is unaware of the significance of the ring.
Young as he is, Max has not yet decided on the course he wants his life to take. He does know that, due to his upbringing, he cannot stand it when he sees innocents harassed or attacked by those more powerful. He feels the same way when friends and allies are attacked.
(I kind of picture him growing into the mold of Bruce Wayne and Harry Dresden. Rich, skillful, using his abilities to help others. He won't turn down a reward, but that is not what he primarily seeks.)
