Their journey back to Iadenveigh and Torch having been delayed by an unnatural blizzard and taking shelter in an orc town in the middle of nowhere, the party is shown to an empty house by Kura, the leader of the orcs. Kura made up the fires and warned the party that things were not as seemed in Kuratown. Before the old orc could explain, Kura’s minder came to check up on him. The two left, leaving more questions that needed to be answered.
Amelina suggested and they searched the small house for secret doors. They found one behind a curtain. It led down to a cellar built into the crack in the rocks. The owner of the house, Vorleg, used the cellar as a place to make and store sheep and goat cheese. Searching the shelves, they turned up Vorleg’s Milking Book. Astrovel studied it. It was a record of how much milk each goat or sheep produced, which goats dropped kids and so on. Among the boring details, it also recorded the events in the town.
About a month ago, the weather turned bad. It got cold and started to snow, At first, the storm seemed local; shepherds reported clear weather ten or more miles from Kuratown. Then the storm became stronger and larger. The Milking Book also described the arrival of Kira Bissel shortly before the weather turned bad.
Something attacked their sheep out on the fields a week later. It was decided to bring them into the barn attached to the house – until the storm blew itself out. Vorleg describes how a week later, the rest of the herd was slaughtered in the barn. Kura did not know what to do. Mordrek, the town’s leader of the guards responded that orcs didn’t raise livestock – they took their bloody carcasses from others. There was a comment about strange footprints and markings outside the house of Horok. In the evening, there were unusual lights and sounds coming from the house. The book ends with a remark that Vorleg and his wife were going to try to flee Kuratown – too many orcs had disappeared and the mood was getting as ugly as the storm.
Erasmus took a few cheeses and left a gold. Then they left the cellar and went in search of Kura. They found him by going from house to house, searching. Most of the houses were empty and looted. Kura’s door was answered by surly looking orc who said that Kura was in his alchemical lab. Astrovel turned the minder into a mouse and Eramus popped him into a flask. A few ounces of whiskey were able to turn the mouse into a drunken stupor. He would recover his form but no one would believe his drunken story.
Now, the party questioned Kura. They learned that Kira Bissel had brought the Kura Klops recipe from Absalom and quickly got the Boneshaker witches to agree to make it. Soon, the orcs were openly talking about returning to the old ways, burning and killing. The party decided that the half-orc was worth further study.
Under the guise of a seeming that made them look like orcs, the party returned to the feast hall. They found it half-empty with Mordrek talking to some of his troops and Bissel at a table, writing in his journal. Talking to Mordrek, the orc held forth on the need for orcs to become strong again, rise up and under the protection of the blizzard, take Starfall. Once they had the Technic Leagues’ weapons, they would rampage across the north. And it would all be possible with the blizzard and their new god.
It was looking like Bissel would be busy a while longer so the party decided to search his living quarters. They found it thanks to Kura’s advice and entered. The place was very organized with everything just right. A search turned up notes that Bissel had taken, a medallion of the Black Heralds and a paperback copy of a translation of “The Secrets of the Dreaming Dark”, volume III. The volume contained several rituals to contact otherworldly entities. The Black Heralds are an organization that sought aliens and aided and supported them – like the Dominion of the Black. They believed that when the aliens finally conquered Golarion, they would be rewarded.
Taking the seeming of a Technic League patrol, the party waited for Bissel to return, rendered him unconscious and left, leaving a spent battery as a accidental reminder that they had been there. The book and medallion left with the party.
As the party left, they noticed motion in the house next door. Going over to it, they discovered that a Boneshaker witch named Grissa had been hiding there. Grissa told them how Bissel had talked most of the witches into supporting his ideas and performing his ritual. The Boneshaker witch did not agree with most of her sisters so she hid. Many of those that disagreed – disappeared soon there after.
With Grissa coming, the party return to their own house and retired for the night. In the morning, the party returned to the feast hall. Bissel was missing but Kura was there with a Boneshaker witch watching, Kura advised them on what was for breakfast – and the party ate. All of the Kura Klops were secretly hidden or made their way to the dogs.
After breakfast, they went over to Horok’s house. The door was locked with a too-good for orcs lock. Amelina opened it easily and opened the door to find a room cleared of furniture. At the end of the room, the floor had been removed, showing a cellar with a green-glowing fungal machine-thing. Around it were Kira Bissel, three Mi-Go fighters and a smaller Mi-Go leader. The Mi-Go leader immediately tried charm person on everyone – but Obin and Grigoro were able to shake it off. Grigoro removed it from Eramus who helped everyone else overcome it. Then the Mi-Go fighters buzzed into the air, fighting from the edge of the floor. Bissel, who had been left behind by his allies, threw daggers from below it to little effect.
Astrovel’s concussion gernade caused some damage but most importantly, it shut down the green-glowing fungus machine. Bissel’s reaction upon seeing the machine’s glow fade out was to shout, “Too soon, you killed the machine too soon.” The fight continued until Bissel and the Mi-Go were dead.
When they left the house, they discovered things had changed. Wendigo were flying in, pursuing Kura and killing the others in the town clearing. A eerie howl had triggered the change and the orcs that had been eating the Kura Klops had given in to their urges and become wendigo. The party rushed over to save the alchemist and destroy the raging creatures.
In the middle of the clearing, above the remains of the war wagon, a huge figure began to form. It was a wendigo of enormous size and frightening appearance. A proxy of Ithaqua, it existed only to clear the way for its god to manifest fully in the world. But its reach was crippled by the destruction of the Mi-Go’s machine which denied it the number of followers to truly become all-powerful.
The party shrugged off its initial magical attacks and ended up destroying it. The blizzard slowly began to lessen and a half-hour later, the sun could be seen through broken clouds. After another day, the party continued on its way to Starfall.
