Having found the hidden entrance to the tunnels from the Gilded Society club, we descended deep underground. Our path takes us through clay earthen tunnels, shored up with timbers, with occasional areas of brickwork where the ground is too unsettled to support itself. After passing one brickwork construction with water dripping through the mortarwork, we guessed we had passed underneath the city sewers.
Ahead, Sir Thabo spotted a faint light; he charged down the tunnel to run after a young man. The young man climbed a ladder and was trying to knock on a trapdoor when Thabo caught up with him. The paladin grabbed the young man as someone opened the trapdoor. The man at the trapdoor took a crossbow bolt from Wolfram and fell into the shaft, killing him outright. The trapdoor slammed shut.
Our attention turned to the young man. He claimed to be nothing more than a messenger, carrying messages between various points in the tunnel network. The message itself was encrypted but Duncan’s Comprehend Languages spell decrypted it. The message from the temple of Iuz requested two more victims from the orphanage for the next High Holy Days as the number of homeless has become scarce lately.
The young man was sent off with a stern warning that if we saw him again, his life was forfeit. Then we lifted the trapdoor and went into the taproom. Nothing was learned from talking to the owner of the tavern.
Back in the tunnel, we head for the orphanage. Thanks to the questioning of the messenger, we had a clearer understanding of where the tunnel network ran although we still hadn’t found the temple of Iuz. At the trapdoor at the top of a long shaft, we had to knock for a time before someone unbarred and opened it.
Standing at the trapdoor was a heavyset man still dressed in a night gown. We hand him the encrypted message. Robur protested and then tried to shove Thabo back down the shaft. Sir Thabo avoided the push and grabbed him. The heavyset man cursed at us but we forced him to lead us to the Caretaker of the Orphanage.
While we were busy talking to the Caretaker through his closed door, Robur tries to sneak away. I (Aerwyn) noticed it and nudged Saphie. The warlock dropped him with her Eldritch Blasts. Wolfram finally gets the door unlocked and we dragged Robur into the Caretaker’s rooms.
As Sir Thabo is questioning the Caretaker under a Zone of Truth spell, Robur comes to and curses us in the name of Iuz. The Caretaker is innocent but questioning Robur turns up the name ‘’Rowena Witcheye’. Robur has been responsible for the disappearance of a lot of orphans – promising that they had apprenticeships somewhere but really turning them over to the temple of Iuz.
The Caretaker becomes enraged at hearing Robur’s betrayal and tries to beat the heavyset man to death with a bedpan. Duncan stopped him. We take Robur and take him back to the Gilded Society where Rudgar Goldfingers, as a cleric of Zilchus, will take charge of him. On the way back, we run into two members of the Westgate Gang, unhappy that we broke into their taproom. We killed one before sending the other, a dwarf, back to the gang leader with the news that we will explain everything at noon the next day at the taproom. We did learn that the Westgate Gang was free of Iuz’s influence, having killed anyone suspected of having ties to the cult.
Back in the tunnels, following the directions given by Robur, we approached the location where we guessed the temple might be. It was supposed to be behind a secret door hidden in an area of brickwork. It took four brickwork areas before Wolfram found the hidden entrance.
Gideon says the pass phrase, dedicating his life to Iuz and passes over the glyph in the floor. The tunnel leads deeper before opening into a 18’ x 18’ chamber. Here was a guardian, a Nycaloth summoned to guard the temple. We kill it.
The tunnel continues before ending in a series of broad stone stairs leading upward. At the base of the stairs, a small group of mercenaries waits. We kill them but the leader kept blowing a brass whistle. Before climbing the steps, I (Aerwyn) disrupt yet another glyph to Iuz. At the top of the stairs, a door opens to reveal room filled with shadows. Six hounds are moving in the darkness. Duncan’s spell temporarily dispels the darkness and we dispatch the hounds. We are now ready to enter the temple itself.
