Thirty days have passed since we’ve returned from Sokol Island. Bishop Braccio has been riding us every day about the Eye and the temple of Lathander so we finally agreed to tackle that. Besides there was that rose window decorated with Bane’s skull that reflected the sun at us in the dock district – that’s got to go.
We began by having Sunny (me) cast a Divination to tell us about the Eye of the Dawn and it’s guardian. The answer from the Cat Lord was not encouraging. The angelic being guarding the Eye had fallen, becoming a black-winged creature full of death and hate.
Scrying the temple grounds revealed the courtyard full of armed believers. A seven-foot tall man in flaming armor was haranguing them. This was Yehani the Merciless, their leader. He spoke and spoke without drawing breath. Swinging the view around showed kennels of hellhounds and fiend lounging in the shade.
So, a frontal assault was out of question. We decided to use the Zentil Keep tabards we had looted earlier and enter the temple grounds through the Textile District gate. After walking through the rubble filled streets of the Textile District, some of us heard the approaching footsteps of a Bane patrol. An ambush was set and the Banites was quickly dispatched. I took the gear from the priest of Bane and put it on.
The gate to the temple compound was guarded. Jaggard, Aleaya and Randall were able to find out the day’s pass phrase and we walked onto the temple grounds. Around us were many buildings – we decided to go into the abbey first.
The ground floor of the abbey had been converted into a scriptorium – dedicated to making copies of Bane’s holy words. They were overseen by a cruel head scribe. He did not take kindly to being disturbed. Sunny closed the double doors to the abbey as the head scribe unleashed his two hellhounds on us. Kelric threw a fireball among the scribes and the scribes and their unholy works all blew up. Moments later, the hellhounds and the head scribe had died as well.
Upstairs, we found an alchemical lab - the alchemist was waiting for us along with two flesh golems. The alchemist uncorked a bottle and sent a living fireball spell at us. The flesh golems with broad axes melded unto their arms waded into battle. We fought back, finally beating them.
Before leaving the abbey, we checked the basement. Here was the kitchen. We intimidated the kitchen staff into staying locked in their cellar.
Crossing the temple compound – still in our Zentil Keep gear – we next entered the parsonage by means of the back door. The parsonage was a two story building wrapped around a open atrium. This would be used by the head of the temple as living quarters and we hoped by the current leader of the Banites. The back door led us into a kitchen where we found a cook and his staff. The cook hinted at something so taking him aside, we questioned him.
He was an agent of the Black Network, a member of Zentil Keep and had been sent here to keep an eye on Jahenny the Merciless. However, he feared that Jahenny was serving some other master and was glad to see that the Black Network had sent people to take care of the problem. The cook warned us that Jahenny was guarded by four foul undead warriors known as the Eyes of Fear and Flame.
Entering the atrium of the parsonage, we found the warriors. Elathrion’s aura and protection helped us survive their fear effects and their flaming bursts. We struggled but finally destroyed them. From the stairs leading to the second story, we heard a noise. Yaheni the Merciless was standing there, slowly clapping. This enraged our paladin, Elathrion, who ran up the stairs and attacked the death knight. Under the repeated blows of Elathrion’s holy avenger, the death knight dropped.
We decided to take a short rest in the parsonage before continuing.
