In the morning, while Aerwyn studied her spells, Dunkin tried to divine which way would be best to find Scardos. The answer was unclear – Scardos probably had taken steps to ward himself from that type of detection. We decided to continue descending into the Rift and look for tracks. We packed up and walked.
An hour later as we were approaching the floor of the Rift, Gideon stopped us. He had heard something – voices – from up ahead. He and Wolfram sneaked ahead to scout it out. The voices came from two female hill giants, loudly arguing about something. Returning to the rest of us, they signaled that we should try to take them out.
As we got closer, the hill giant women heard us. Aerwyn snapped off a Fireball as the two obese giants charged. Our young companions were slammed aside as the hill giants crashed into our party. Sir Thabo and Gideon start their attacks as Aerwyn finished one off with a fire orb. Sir Thabor killed the other one. With the skirmish over, we were able to check out the bag that one had been rummaging through.
We then continued our descent onto the floor of the Rift. At this point, the Rift was fifteen miles across, covered in lush growth, bogs and swamps. Gideon took the lead, guiding us through the worst of the brush.
Around midday, we start to come across signs of a large predator – bones and chewed up remains. Gideon looked at the area and the tracks and said that we had entered a green dragon’s hunting range. The druid turned to a nearby oak and using a Speak with Plants spell, learned about local druid circles and tree shepherds.
While he was still communing with the oak, the green dragon descended upon our party. It breathed obnoxious poison gas on us, leaving Aerwyn barely alive. Some of our companions didn’t survive. Aerwyn used her Mystic Step spell to get away from the dragon as Sir Thabo, Dunkin and Sathy unsheathed their weapons.
Finally we managed to kill it. Gideon helped bury the victims of the green dragon’s breath while Aerwyn cast Tensor’s Floating Disk to carry the dragon’s head. Its lair was fairly near so we decided to rest and recuperate there.
The next morning, we set out again. Our goal was to find the circle of druids mentioned by the oak tree and get them to help us. Our walk was quiet as most large creatures had been killed by the green dragon. As we were finishing our midday break, a jackdaw landed on a nearby branch, changed into a druid and asked us what we were doing.
We explained our need to find Scardos and his people. The druid that was a jackdaw decided that we should meet the rest of his druidic circle.
At the edge of the hunting range of the green dragon, we found the rest of the druidic circle, In talking to them, we decided that we could trust them with the truth about Scardos – that we suspected him of being a secret agent of Iuz, using his skills to gather and then betray the rebels to Iuz. They told us of Scardos’s encampment in caves on the south wall of the Rift and that they would guide us to a safe place near the encampment. It would take two days travel. Waylon would be our guide.
On the final day, we left the forest cover and headed across open terrain. Waylon was telling us that while the north side of the Rift was home to wyverns, hill giants, chimeras and dragons, the south side was patrolled by ogres, hobgoblins, orcs and other minions of Iuz.
That’s when the roving band of orcs spotted us. Their banners bore the open eye of Iuz. The two dozen orcs charged at us, encouraged by the cries of their warlord and a cleric of Gruumsh. The one-eyed Gruumsh cleric was yelling at his band to capture more people; they were going to sacrifice them all to their one-eyed god. Aerwyn launched a Fireball at the largest grouping of orcs as Dunkin and Sir Thabo fought with their warlord. Gideon, in the form of an allosaurus was surrounded by orcs before the others came to his rescue.
As his warband began to fall under our blades and spells, the one-eyed cleric turned to run. Sathy’s Eldritch Blast dropped him before he could make his escape. We decided to try to rescue the prisoners before they could be sacrificed. Waylon told us he would help find them.
