It was the beginning of the end of Scardos’s coup. He was trapped in the upper three floors of the Residential Tower along with Jovian, his other companions and a small group of elite guards. We had to go in and kill them while rescuing the Countess’ husband Marik and her other son, Donald.
The rats were cornered - but cornered rats can fight back. We found that out when we started up the backstairs. No sooner had we turned into the first floor than we were attacked by six guards. As we were fighting them, Coryn, the female bard, Traves, the rogue with the knives and four more guards came down the broad stairway to join the fight.
Traves went after our rogue, Wolfram and finally killed him. Dunkin was very effective, his Channel Divinity doing a fair amount of radiant damage. When the fight was over, Dunkin used a scroll of Revivify to restore Wolfram to life.
On the next and final floor, we found eight more guards. Sir Thabo charged into the room, killing a guard with his sword. Wolfram followed, dropping another guard with his knives. Then Jovian appeared from nowhere and threw a fireball upon us. The guards turned out to be an illusion. Scardos appeared next with a flurry of blows on Dunkin, our cleric.
Jovian gestured and launched a prismatic spray at our party. The different colors of the spray badly hurt us - Gideon was down, Wolfram slow turning to stone and Duncan starting to fade into another dimension. I (Aerwyn) quickly poured a healing potion into our druid, bringing him around again.
Aerwyn looked up to see Scardos continuing to beat on Dunkin while Sir Thabo hitting Scardos. Gideon and Saphy engaged with Jovian while the wizard threw out more damaging spells. Aerwyn didn’t do much - every spell she cast at Jovian - he blocked with a wand casting Shield. But Saphy and Gideon finally dropped the wizard before he could kill all of us.
Scardos went down under Sir Thabo’s attacks. Aerwyn put another spell or two into him to make sure that he was dead. But Wolfram’s battle with petrification had ended and he was now a stone statue. Duncan shook off his dimension shifting.
The sound of more guards on the stairs caught our attention. The Countess sent her own men to mop up. We carefully took Wolfram’s statue back down the stairs.
The next day, Wolfram’s petrification was removed. The Countess’ guards found that Marik and Donald had been killed and disintegrated and their ashes scattered. They could not be raised from the dead. We had the honor of being invited to a great dinner party in which the Countess thanked us for our efforts on the part of Nyrond. Each of us was rewarded with rooms in the palace, fine clothes and a small cash gift.
Most of the survivors of Scardos’ forces were exiled in the Bandit /Kingdoms - including Dunkin’s sister. The rest of them were executed by the Countess.
And then, the planning began - it was time to deal with Iuz’s forces in the Bandit Kingdom - especially those south of the Rift - once and for all.
