Dorian Montrose
Dorian is the eldest son of Nigel Montrose, patriarch of the New York Montrose family. He was born on the 6th of August, in the year 1900 and graduated top of his class from Tyana Academy in 1918.
At school Dorian was Head Boy, a Prefect, a straight A student, and a champion duellist. His team (The Wild Wands) earned a medal in the schoolwide Mage Challenge every year and took the gold medal 3 out of the 4 years he was in the Upper Tier. They also won the American Mage Challenge (the competition between Tyana, Pithian and Batons de Sagesse) in their senior year.
His rival at school was Ogden Travers, a mageborn man of an old, but relatively unimportant family. Travers was much like Dorian in that he was very competitive, but he always came in second to Dorian, winning the silver to Dorian's gold. Even in their sixth year, when the Wild Wands came in second in the Mage Challenge, it was the Black Staves who won the gold. Travers' Mage Knights came in third.
Now Ogden Travers is an up and coming lieutenant in the MLE who continues to resent Dorian's successes at school and in investigating threats to the magical community.
Dorian works for the Daily Arcane Observer and for its mundane publication The New Yorker as a free lance journalist, holding a press pass for each. He doesn't need the money, or a job of any kind, since he is wealthy enough to live the life of a dilettante.
Dorian is the classic example of a Montrose, kind and considerate, with just a touch of unconscious condescension for those who are lower than him on the social scale. He believes that it is his obligation as a mage and a Montrose to protect both the magical and mundane societies from magical threats.
Dorian's parents stay mostly at the Nassau country estate, leaving the Upper East Side Brownstone mansion for his use. In early 1925, his uncle Sebastian disappeared under mysterious circumstances, leaving Dorian lots of money and house in Quebec. He also left him a chest, hidden among the crates that were delivered from Quebec.
The chest contains books and materials stolen from the Church of Starry Wisdom (Temple de Sagesse des Etoiles) in Canada. The other branches of this organization desire to get these materials back. They're pretty sure that Dorian has them, but they aren't completely certain. They want to find out what he knows, kill him, kill everyone he may have told of their secrets and retrieve their materials. Dorian is completely unaware of their existence to this point, as all of Oncle Sebastien's bequests are still sitting in one of the third floor storage rooms in the Brownstone.
Dorian isn't politically active, but he supports the Liberal faction both from personal ideology and family loyalty. He has many progressive friends, however, including many Van Stern and Da Silva cousins.
