NYR-08 The Wrong Temple of Evil
So there we were, standing outside a smooth stone door in a featureless stone wall with only a bell pull to announce our entrance. Luckily, Gideon had another wild shape so he changed into a spider and climbed through the bell pull hole. In the other side. In addition to the two guards, there were two levers that had to be pulled to open the door. He dropped his spider shape and began to pull on the first lever. The guards immediately attacked him. He was able to get the second lever pulled before the guards’ swords dropped him.
Sir Thabo rushed in, followed by the rest of us. We could now see that the guards’ tabards were decorated with the symbols of Nerull. Not Iuz as we had thought but still an evil god whose worship was outlawed throughout Nyrond. The last guard was cut down as he reached for the alarm bell.
After some healing, we left the guard room and began to follow the corridor. As we moved through the complex, we became aware the the size of the temple reflected the courtyard above. Only one side of the corridor had doors, the other marked the sanctuary of the temple. Opening the doors, we found various guards, some resting for their turn at guard duty, others asleep in their bunks. We killed and killed them all.
Ahead, the corridor made a sharp turn. Painted on the floor was a broad red line. Kerwin sniffed for a trap but could not find one. We stepped around the corner and found six men in chainmail and maces coming up the corridor. Dunkin’s fireball dropped all of them. We stepped over their bodies. More men armed the same way were still coming. Aerwyn’s fireball took most of them out. Examining their remains, we were surprised to find that they were all undead.
At this time, more doors in the corridor opened and the vampire spawn from the four way groin vault appeared. Sir Thabo and Gideon ran ahead to attack them. Dunkin threw down a spirit guardian, causing the two of them to take radiant damage. While Sir Thabo and Gideon finished off the vampire spawn, another door opened and six more undead entered the fray. We could tell that they were dangerous – they had the blue glowing eyes of wights. Duncan responded with yet another fireball. Gideon took the shape of a Wooly Rhino and charged the lot.
The wights turned and ran. We cut them down. Under the radiant damage of the spirit guardian, the wights were finished off. More wights entered the corridor. Gideon, still in the form of a Wooly Rhino charged again. The wights’ attacks forced Gideon out of his wild shape. We ran up to Gideon as the wights ran around a corner.
Sir Thabo and the others ran after the wights. Gideon, still injured and Aerwyn, stayed behind the corner.
Raising from smoke was a woman. She matched the description of Lascindra Mordane, a powerful witch from long ago. She turned to Gideon, dropped him and grabbed Aerwyn. Aerwyn used her Misty Step to step away from the vampire and then unleashed a Thunderwave. She hoped that the sound would call the others back. Kerwin, still invisible thanks to Aerwyn’s spell, kept her busy but she started to cast Cone of Cold to take us out. When Sir Thabo ran back, the vampire decided to teleport away.
We decide to contact the Grey Seer. He signaled us to wait and that troops are being sent. Finding a safe spot beneath the statue that was the entrance to the underground complex, we waited until we were relieved by priests of Hieroneous.
Finally, we got back to the castle in Rel Mord. Aerwyn just wanted to crash in her rooms but we are to be presented to the king the following evening.
