Django ‘DJ’ Mortlake
DJ is an alchemist and artificer who graduated last spring from Severin College. He is about 5’ 10” and weighs about 170 lbs. He has hazel eyes and curly brown hair that he wears shoulder length.
He has an older sister, Joyce, who is (or was) a much more talented magician and she too was a student. She went missing just prior to her getting her MS degree. She was studying divination and complex celestial numerology. All DJ knows is she was working as a research assistant to an interdisciplinary research team. Joyce and DJ were very close, and they shared a third-floor apartment downtown. DJ now has a roommate named Steve (who happens to be his Dungeon Master and a fairly untalented wizard), who may or may not be important in future stories. Unbeknownst to DJ his sister’s abductors are hunting him because they think he knows more than he does, but she may have left him some clues and info that he has not found yet, who knows?
DJ is incapable of wand magic but give him his lab and formulary and enough time, he can do some pretty amazing things. He comes from a solidly middle-class magical family in the Pacific Northwest, but his parents met at Severin College, and they really wanted him and his sister to go there. He trades labor for lab time at Alchemy House and sells potions (his Pomade of Faire Locks is particularly popular). He works part time as a bartender at the bar owned by The Golden Rule to supplement this income. He also likes working there because he can easily pick up information and he hopes to find clues to his sister’s whereabouts.
DJ has been dating a beta wererat lady named Stephanie Shaw for the past two years. Stephanie’s older sister, Anne, is an alpha and a climber in the skinchanger community. Anne hates DJ, for being a wizard, for being a loser of a wizard (what’s the point of being a wizard if you can’t do any more than stir a cauldron?!?), for being a bartender who is more concerned with his hair than his prospects, and for dating her kid sister who needs to be protected from motorcycle riding asshats with good hair.
DJ is good looking in a quirky way with good hair (lay off it is a fantasy game) and he is more curious than is good for him. He is also unflinchingly loyal to his friends.
Steve DuMont – 25, a wizard who is largely untalented. He has some skill with illusions and glamors, but lacks discipline. He is living off of his family’s trust fund – which is not substantial, but he is exceedingly frugal. Steve has been known to enchant some $1 bills to look like $20s in a pinch. He is DJ and Stephanie’s Dungeon Master (with a few other friends) Lately they can only get together once a month. When Joyce disappeared, Steve moved in and took over half of the lease. GM notes: it is up to you how important he or the rest of DJ’s D&D group are.
Stephanie Shaw – 21, DJ’s girlfriend. She is a beta wererat and she works at her family sandwich shop downtown. She is also studying Communications at Severin College. She has dreams of becoming a reporter for the wider magical world, but she sometimes has some confidence problems. She is smart and tenacious. She likes the attention dating DJ draws from the versipelis community, and especially how it drives her sister up the wall. Stephanie and DJ are very much in love. Stephanie happens to think DJ is handsome.
Anne Shaw – 24, DJ’s personal rival. Anne is an investigator with the Severin Police Department. She is an alpha wererat and can be stuck up. She resents the fact that there will be Custodes setting up in town, even if they are only around to protect the veil. She has a bit of an axe to grind with wizards who fleece and abuse their power and she feels that the wizards are to blame for the increase in vampires in town. Secretly, she would love to wield the power to burn someone to ashes with her will. She does NOT think DJ is attractive.
Joyce Mortlake – 24, DJ’s older sister. Joyce is a very talented wizard, while not spectacular with flinging spells on the fly, she was very talented at divination and scrying. She could rival some of the best mind mages at retrocognition and remote sensing, given time to set up her ritual. She was recruited for an ‘Interdisciplinary Research Project’ in the final year of her MS at Severin College. Two weeks before finals last fall, she disappeared leaving no trace. DJ is very worried about her.
