Where to go in Sandpoint
Sandpoint, at the mouth of the slow moving Turandark River, is like New Orleans – a gateway to the inland. Logs and farm products travel by boat down the river and get transferred to larger ships for shipment to Magnimar. It is also a frontier town, the last port north of Magnimar for hundreds of miles.
Sandport harbor is a modestly sized natural harbor serving both larger ships and river-going boats. The Valdemar family has a shipyard here with four drydocks to build and repair most vessels. Near is Fatman’s Feedbag – Sandport’s most notorious dive bar. Bar fights are common and Sheriff Hemlock has to come down to the bar regularly to sort things out.
Traveling uphill from Fatman's Feedbag, along Salmon Street, you come to Market Street and the Rusty Dragon. The Rusty Dragon is Sandport’s oldest inn, run for the last six years by Ameiko Kaijitsu. Next to it is the Goblin Squash Stables where horses can be stabled or borrowed.
Heading westward toward the Varisia Gulf, you enter the large open Sandpoint marketplace. Empty most of the week except when the farmers come in from the surrounding countryside to offer their produce. From here, Water Street borders the harbor and the rising cliffs, passing by the Hagfish Tavern. A popular tavern, it is the place to go for fresh fish. It is across the street from the Turandarok Academy – a two story building that serves both as a school and an orphanage.
The Turandarok Academy is on the corner of Water Street and Main Street. Traveling along Main Street, you would find yourself between the Sandpoint Town Hall and the Sandpoint Garrison near the top of the hill. From here, there is a great view of the town spreading out below. Main Street continues on for a bit before turning east, becoming Junker’s Way. Junker’s Way is named for the steep cliffs north where Sandpoint dumps its refuse. Continuing easterly, the road is named Church Street where it passes the new Sandpoint Cathedral. All the buildings in this area were destroyed or damaged when the earlier Sandpoint shrine burned. In this area stands the White Deer Inn, Sandport’s other inn. The road ends at the Northgate where it passes through a city wall to become the Lost Coast Road.
If you had turned west from the Sandport Townhall, it would be short walk up to the ruins of the Old Light. This huge structure is now only a stump, once estimated at 700 feet tall. This is the highest point in Sandport.
Also worth visiting is the Sandport Theater, an impressive building. Nearby, the actors and theater goers can get a drink at the Cracktooth’s Tavern. The tavern has its own stage where newcomers can play before an audience and be discovered.
On the west side of Sandport, on the cliffs overlooking the gulf lies the Sandport Glassworks. This large structure produces fine glassware which is shipped south to Magnimar and from there, all over Varisia.
Along the banks of the Turandarok River, upstream from the harbor sit several buildings – the Scarnetti Mill, the Sandport Lumber Mill and the Rovanky Tannery, all taking the products of the farms and logging camps and turning them into materials that can be sold in Magnimar.
