Character Traits for Rise of the Runelords
Characters made for the Rise of the Runelords should have reasons for being in the town of Sandpoint. It would better if they actually lived in the town or the surrounding countryside. I will give some reasons for being in Sandport and additional benefits (Pathfinder Campaign Traits). These are modified from the original Player's Guide to the Rise of the Runelords.
Eager Performer: You are part of Cyrdak Drokkus’ performing group. Or you hope to be. You gain one rank in the Communication (Performance) focus. Mages with the Intelligence( Illusion Arcana) have their targets roll against their Spellpower + 1.
Family Ties: You have been raised among Varisians and Sczarni. (Sczarni are the Varisian mafia with many of the same attributes – family, honor, code of silence.) As such, when you arrived in Sandport, you went to a friend of your extended family - Jubrayl Vhiski at Sandport’s infamous dive bar, the Fatman’s Feedbag. He’s promised to take you in and give you a place to stay. You gain one rank in the Intelligence (Thieves’ Lore) focus. You also get a +1 to any questions concerning local lore.
Friends and Family: One of your family members helped Daviren Hosk put down a mob of goblins near Sandpoint. Daviren Hosk has not forgotten the help and will welcome you in Sandpoint. Daviren Hosk runs the Goblin Squash Stable in Sandport and offers to stable your animal for free. If you don’t have a steed, Daviren will offer one of his. In additional, Daviren Hosk is knowledgeable in the ways of goblins and happy to pass this knowledge on – you gain a +1 to any questions about goblins.
Giant Slayer: Your family is familiar with giants, having battled lone giants that seek to plunder their village. Having heard of rumors that giants have been seen near Sandport, you decided to come to the town and check things out. You gain a +1 to Perception and Willpower (Self-Discipline) tests made against giants. You also get a +1 to damage rolls made against creatures of the giant sub-type.
Goblin Watcher: You grew up in Sandport. Spending time at the cliff of Junker’s Edge, watching the goblins scrounge through the discarded junk, you developed an eye for spotting the most useful items. You gain one rank in the Perception( Seeing) focus and one rank in Intelligence (Evaluation) focus.
Hagfish Hopeful: Ever since you heard about the contest at the Hagfish tavern for drinking a pitcher of the most vile alcohol drink to win a coin purse, you have wanted the bragging rights for winning. You trained yourself over the years but that coin purse is just of reach. You gain one rank in the Constitution (Tolerance) focus, downing stuff that a starving pig would gag at.
Merchant Family: You are related to one of the four powerful mercantile families of Sandport. Your experience in the family business has helped you gain one rank in the Communication( Bargaining) focus and the Intelligence (Evaluation) focus.
Monster Hunter: You came to Sandport, following rumors of a creature that needed to be slain. It might be the Sandport Devil, Old Murdermaw or some other monster. At the moment, you are working with Belor Hemlock, helping him with the local policing of the town while researching for more stories about your prey. You gain +1 to damage rolls against monsters and magical beasts. In addition, you gain one rank in the Intelligence (Military Lore) focus from working with Sheriff Hemlock.
Scholar of the Ancients: Growing up with your books and in the shadow of the Old Light, you have always been interested in ancient history. Varisia is rich in monuments of the ancient Thassilon empire. You have been able to learn from the local sage, Brodert Quink, enough to learn the almost forgotten Thassilonian language. You gain one rank in Intelligence (Arcane Lore) and Intelligence (Historical Lore) foci. In additional, you can read and speak Thassilonian – although with an accent.
Student of the Faith: You have lived your life in service to a single deity but you see there is something to be learned from the other religions and faiths. The rebirth of Sandport’s cathedral from the ashes of the previous shrine has sparked your interest and you came to be a part of it. In your faith, you have gained one rank in Intelligence (Religious Lore). Furthermore, if you have the Intelligence (Healing Arcana), you can know one more spell out of the novice Healing Arcana.
