This is summarized from the Player’s Guide to the Rise of the Runelords PDF and should serve as a hint to people creating their characters for the campaign.
Ancient Lost Cultures: An ancient threat from lost times is reemerging into the world. Characters with foci in Intelligence (Arcane Lore) and Intelligence( Historical Lore) might gain a clearer view of what is happening.
Dangerous Denizens: The Rise of the Runelords has many dangerous beings – both monstrous and human. Prepared characters should be ready to put an end to their threat.
Explorers: The Lost Coast is still unsettled terrain with only a few towns like Sandport giving a sense of security. Characters with talents and focus sets appropriate for exploring lost ruins, dungeons, and strange lands – Communication (Investigation), Perception (Searching), Strength (Climbing) and Strength (Might) - might all be useful.
Giant Hunters: Rumors of Hill Giants and more moving through the wilds of Varisia are spreading and characters that can handle such large problems would be helpful.
Into the Wilds: Some of this campaign will be delving into ancient ruins – but much of the time will be spent on the surface. Characters must be comfortable tackling swamps, mountains and forests. Good foci to have would be Dexterity (Riding), Intelligence (Natural Lore), Perception (Tracking), Strength (Climbing) and Dexterity( Stealth).
The population of Sandport is mostly human, around three dozen halflings, two dozen or so elves, the same number of dwarves, and roughly a dozen gnomes, half-elves, and half-orcs.
