In the 24th century humanity has spread through near space. The Earth Alliance is a military alliance with weak authority in other areas that controls most of the systems within 50 light years of Earth. A stable (and presumably artificial) wormhole connects a star system on the edge of Earth Alliance space (Bubastis) with a star system (Pharos) more than 500 light years coreward in the orion arm of the galaxy.
Pharos sector is the region of space around the wormhole. Because there are alien worlds in the region, the Earth Alliance finds it prudent to control both ends of the Bubastis-Pharos wormhole junction.
The Pharos system is controlled by the Pharos Corporation which maintains a space station near the mouth of the wormhole and other facilities in system (such as fuel skimming and refineries around the gas giant Pharos 4). The campaign is nominally set on Pharos station, but stories will take the characters abroad throughout the system.
The level of technology is slightly lower than in the Third Imperium setting assumed in the rulebook. Earth and the Core worlds are TL 14 with a very few elements of TL 15. The average TL in the Earth Alliance is 12 with a few colony worlds a little lower. In the Pharos Sector, few worlds surpass TL 12 and most advanced technology comes through the wormhole from Alliance space. Lyra colony has achieved TL 14 in computers and bioengineering.
The wormhole was officially discovered by the Lyra expedition 150 years ago, although ships had been disappearing through it for a few decades before that. The scout ship Lyra (a large scouting vessel with a crew of 50) disappeared in the Pharos sector shortly after making the discovery about the nature of the wormhole. The Earth-Shoomari war prevented the Alliance from looking for the Lyra expedition and by the time of the Janus expedition (fifty years later), the crew of the Lyra had already established themselves in the Lyra system (named after themselves).
Humans, Shoomari and Tekkaren have a joint use treaty for the Busbastis-Pharos wormhole, allowing all three races to use it for exploration and expansion (all three feel a need to expand in a direction away from the expansionist Chumakh Theocracy that lies rimward of their space). In the Pharos Sector itself, the Kshandry, Myrgha and Medusans are expanding.
The Nilgar traders and mysterious Zaxim can be found in both regions and no one knows where their homeworlds can be found.
Pharos Sector lies in a region of space with densely packed star systems and substantial mineral wealth.
