Should it become necessary to build another character, I wanted to provide a list of core worlds that the character could come from. This thread is to discuss the Core Worlds of the Earth Alliance.

Earth Population: 12.6 billion humans; 132,000 uplifted dolphins; 234,000 uplifted chimps Government: Representative Democracy (de jure)/Bureaucracy (de facto) Collective Noun: Earther
Earth is home to about half the human population. Although many worlds have a higher per capita GPP, Earth's enormous population means that it has the largest economy in Alliance Space.
Earth is still slowly recovering from an economic collapse during the Golden Age of colonization. Sea levels are still +57 meters from the year 2000 datum. Centuries of indutrial pollution have degraded the aquifer and disrupted the ecosystem. The oxygen cycle is supported by massive algae tanks producing oxygen and the basic nutitional supplement (aka kibble) eaten by the poorest quintile of the population.
Earth's massive population has led to the lower quintile existing through government subsidies. Industry lags due to hostility towards automation. Earth has one of the few populations that will riot in the streets over the prospect of losing a job that can be easily perfomed by a machine.
Earth is still divided into 13 regional zones with semi-autonomous governments. These regions send representatives to a United Earth Council that governs the planet.
The disappearance of several heavily populated tropical nations led to mass migrations of people from Indonesia, the Indian subcontinent, Africa and South America to Central Europe, Central Asia and North America.

La Grange Population: 523.6 million humans; 24,000 uplifted chimps Government: Balkanized (each station is independent, but sends representatives to a La Grange Council. Collective Noun: Spacer
The La Grange Council represents all those living in space habitats at Lunar La Grange L4 and L5, and Earth La Grange L4 and L5.
Much of the Solar System's industry is located at these colonies. Some of the best known products are Luna Lasers (makers of weapons, medical tools and long distance communications equipment), Loomis (makers of crytalline microchips) and Quark Systems (makers of jump drives) and Lunar Energetics (suppliers of Tritium and Helium 3).
La Grange is the wealthies part of the Solar System.

Mars Population: 25.3 million humans; 1,200 uplifted chimps Government:Representative Democracy Capital: Areopagus Collective Noun: Martian
Mars was never a good choice for colonization due to its weak gravity and cold temperatures. Nonetheless, in the days before the invention of the hyperdrive, intrepid and individualistic humans set out to make it their home.
The people of Mars live in domed or underground communities. The majority of the planet is desolate, uninhabited wasteland.

Haven Population: 1.3 billion humans Government: Balkanized (five large zones) Collective Noun: Havenite
Haven was the first human settlement outside the Solar System (in the Alpha Centauri system). Founded under the auspices of the United Nations in 2111, this colony never had the resources to provide for the population that Earth kept dumping on them. With a history of internal struggle, Haven has failed to live up to its promise.
The planet is slightly warmer and drier than Earth with a semi-compatible biochemistry. The five zones are led by warlords or small oligarchic groups (usually the military). Semi-literacy is the norm for the lower classes.
Haven has the lowest per capita GPP in the Alliance.

Fatima Population: 2.2 billion humans Government: Representative Democracy Capital: Islamiya Collective Noun: Fatimid
Fatima was the first colony founded a group other than the UN (in 2117). The Islamiya Coalition put together a bid and won the rights to settle the world. Using a combination of high tech equipment and brute force, they introduced earth plants and animals to the world. When the colonists first arrived, the planet had a primitive ecosystem. The land was covered with lichens and mosses, with a few small insects. The seas were filled with diatomes, sponges and jellies, with a few crustaceans. The native ecosystem (now mostly gone) is incompatible with earth based life forms.
The planet is slightly warmer and much drier than Earth with 42% water cover. There are five small salty seas completely surrounded by land. The colonists fish the seas and farm the lands near the waterways.
Most of the original colonists were from the Arab states and Islamic Africa. The original government had been set up as a Caliphate, but a mass influx of Indonesians caused a shift towards democracy. The Malay also became dominant at this time.
Today, Fatima is a fairly successful colony. The planet produces enough food for its people and supplies all the resources they need. Some of the native lichens have proved to be valuable pharmaceuticals.
Fatima supplies more than its fair share of recruits for the Alliance Marines and Army. This may be due to the presence of Fort Sa'id, the Alliance Army commando training facility.
Fatima lags behind the other core worlds in technology, with an overall TL 11. However, TL 12-13 goods are not difficult to find.

Avalon Population: 4.2 billion humans Government: Representative Democracy Capital: New London Collective Noun: Avalons
Avalon was the second colony founded a group other than the UN (in 2120).
Avalon was originally founded by the British Commonwealth, with substantial minorities from Europe and India. The colonial charter called for a Parliamentary Republic with an aristocratic facade. The major investors were named Earls of Avalon and Richard, the younger brother of King Charles IV of England, was enticed to assume the monarchy as Richard I of Avalon. An honors list is posted each year elevating those deemed worthy to one of the various knighthoods established on the planet. All these titles are purely honorary and bestow no power or privilege on the honoree.
Avalon is slightly cooler and damper than Earth, with 80% water cover. The local flora tends to reds and purples rather than green, and local fauna is dominated by feathered creatures. Despite appearances, however, the local biochemistry is semi-compatible with earth based life.
The capital of Avalon is New London, but the biggest city is Seaton. The local TL is 13-14, and the GPP is high. While not a leader in any particular industy, Avalon is top tier in all of them. It is a leader in wine production, with many Avalon labels pretigious enough to warrant shipping them to other systems.
The planet is also the source of chocomel and choffee, two foodstuffs that come from the same local seed. Chocomel is made from fermented seed paste and is often used in desserts. Many gourmets insist that chocomel is better than chocolate, with a taste that is similar to both chocolate and caramel. When the seeds are roasted, they can be seeped in hot water to produce a drink that rivals coffee in popularity. It contains very little caffeine and has overtones of chocolate.
Both of these products are shipped off planet under the brand name Carlisle.
While substantial groups on the planet speak French, Russian or Punjabi, everyone is fluent in English.

Gaia Population: 1.9 billion humans Government: Representative Democracy Capital: Fontana Collective Noun: Gaians
Gaia was the third colony founded a group other than the UN (in 2121).
The planet originally had a reducing atmosphere and no life on its land surfaces. The original biochemistry of the planet was incompatible with earth based life. The early colonists lived in sealed environments and grew foodstuffs hydroponically. However, planetologists had assured them that the world could be made into a second Earth.
Tailor made microorganisms thrived on Gaia and began converting the atmosphere to an oxidizing mixture. Continual tinkering with these engineered microbes led to a rapid change in the atmosphere.
In 2352, Gaia has a normal atmosphere (slightly elevated oxygen levels) and a working terrestrial ecosystem. The planet has a high GPP and an overal TL of 12-13. It has a TL 14 in bioengineering.
Gaia is where Helix Biotechnica got its start. Helix Bioengineering, a wholly owned subsidiary of Helix Biotechnica, is still headquartered on Gaia. This company produces tailor made organisms for ecological engineering. Helix Biotechnica is now headquartered in a dozen pairs of massive O'Neil cylinders at Gaia L4, where it enjoys semi-autonomous self-regulation.
Most of the colonists for Gaia came from the USA and Latin America. Both English and Spanish are used in official documentation, but almost everyone on the planet is fluent in English.
Gaians have a strong social conscience, but believe that people should pull their own load whenever possible. They are always among those arguing against any increase in the power of the Alliance Council, or in the fiscal donation. They also lead the charge to draw down the military between conflicts, claiming that a standing military is the enemy of freedom.

Paradisio Population: 500 million humans Government: Oligarchy Capital: Hope Collective: Paradisians
Hope was founded in 2125.
Paradisio is garden world, warmer than Earth, with a lush ecosystem that is biochemically incompatible with earth based life. The inhabitants live in nearly 1000 cities, each of which is surrounded by a verdant belt of terrestrial plants and animals. The inhabitants clear cut the local flora, sanitize the ground to kill off microscopic life forms and then introduce terrestrial lifeforms.
The paradisians have a caste based society. Citizens are put into castes based on genetic assays, and higher castes have more privileges than lower castes. The Alpha caste runs the government and makes all the important decisions. Beta caste is the managerial and technical caste. Gamma caste contains other fill citizens who perform the other jobs in their society. Delta caste citizens have limited rights. Epsilon class citizens have fewer rights.
Citizens are born in uterine replicators. Their culture has the necessary technology to screen for genetic problems and to correct them in the UR - but they don't. In reality, genetic engineering and modification in UR are used to ensure that there are enough citizens in each caste to keep their society running. It's widely believed outside of Paradisio that the bureaucracy that runs the planet is corrupt. The Alpha caste and (to a lesser extent) the Beta caste enjoy the services of tailor made epsilon caste citizens who are little more than slaves.
On some worlds, any inhabitant of Paradisio would be considered an artificial person.
Alpha Caste - humans with no defects and genetic enhancements.
Beta Caste - humans with no defects.
Gamma Caste - humans with intelligence at the low end of normal intelligence.
Delta Caste - humans with low intelligence who perform what menial labor is required in a high tech society.
Epsilon Caste - humans who've been genetically altered to perform specific tasks. They are usually of Gamma level intelligence, but it could be lower or higher. This caste includes personal servants who've been modified for appearance and personality.
Paradisio supplies its own forces to the Alliance Navy, under its own commanders and with its own crews. Their ships are mixed in the Alliance fleets, but don't share crews and officers with the rest of the fleet. Some Paradisian Alpha caste citizens serve among the rest of the fleet.

AuroraPopulation: 2.1 billion Government: Representative Democracy (Planetary Senate) Capital: Chrysopolis Collective: Aurorans Chrysopolis was founded in 2130. Aurora is an earthlike world orbiting a K-class star. It is 0.95% as large as the Earth with a surface gravity of 1.05. When originally colonized, the planet had a simple biosystem whose plants had only just begun colonizing the land masses (which account for 45% of the planetary surface). Over the centuries, the native ecosystem has been replaced by Earth plants, genetically engineered to thrive on the surface of the planet. Because the planet is naturally colder than Earth (and has become moreso with the reduction of CO2 levels that came with terrforming), the colony maintains a series of levered mirrors around the planet that can be turned to allow light through on the daylit side and closes to reflect light back onto the surface on the night side. As a consequence, Aurora has no true nighttime. At night, a series of 6 small (about 1/4 the apparent size of the Earth's Moon) false suns shed light equivalent to a cloudy dawn or dusk. The mirrors aren't visible during the day. Aurora is an egalitarian, social-democratic society, whose many political parties range all the way from the marginally left of center to the barely right of center. Economically, it is a very well regulated capitalist economy, with average CEO pay in a 25:1 ratio with average worker pay. Residents enjoy universal health care and an adequate, if not overly generous, social safety net. Colonists come from various regions of Old Earth. - 30% North America
- 25% Korea
- 20% Vietnam
- 15% China
- 5% Brazil
- 5% Other (mostly Indochina, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines)
The most common religions on Aurora are: - 40% - None
- 25% - Zen Buddhism
- 20% - Unitarianism
- 10% - Ecumenical Christianity
- 5% - Ecumenical Sufiism
- <1% - Other
Aurora is well-known for its manufacturing, especially smaller spaceships and starships (yachts, survey ships, etc ....) Aurora shipyards are one of the best known manufacturers of these craft. They also produce luxury personal ground vehicles, aircraft and even water craft. Aurora is also known as a fashion leader. The Vermillion City Fashion Expose is famous throughout the core worlds. Aurora has a reputation as a sybaritic world because of its famous pleasure facilities, nude beaches and spas. Aurora has a reputation as a dealmaker and consensus builder in the Alliance Council.
