Hugo Ronk, 35-year-old, lawful neutral, male, human, wizard.
Hugo Stands about 5’10 feet tall, with broad shoulders and a saggy belly. He has thick hairy fingers, with muscular arms that have a couple tattoos that could probably be chalked up to a misspent youth. His graying, wiry hair is barely held in check by a widebrimmed conical hat of moss green felt. His face is mostly covered with a shaggy, salt-and-pepper beard, but his eyes are extraordinarily alert. You could be forgiven for missing all of this because in the center of his face is tied a silver nose.
None of this seems to fit the picture of a man who was once considered a bright young star of Thaumaturgy & Practical Divination at Candlekeep. His first pamphlet, ‘Nystul’s use of Counter-Divinatory Magicks’ was a revolution to all of those who read it. He had a reputation for top-notch scholarship, clever, approachable and concise writing, and enjoying the limelight.
All of this changed two years ago during his dual over the astrological charts of the future-fate of Tethyrian merchantman ‘Ebonmoon’ with Heironimus Ravenswing, renown Amnish Diviner. A down on their luck Tethyrian merchant house decided to try and divine the future from the stars of their last big shot at recaptured wealth before they set sail. So they hired the two most famous Wizards they could afford. Hugo could tell that the trip was doomed, he was right, but Heironimous was content to give the merchant house answers they wanted to hear, rather than the truth. This hypocrisy would not stand. Hugo challenged Heironimus to a duel of wizards in the middle of the square. Hugo won the dual, losing his nose in the process, but in doing so he called upon chaos magics thought to be too dangerous by the wizened penistips of Candlekeep. Hugo was cast out and his reputation was ruined. Ever since he has been a vagabond wizard trying to reclaim his name and reputation.
Goals:
to find great arcane knowledge and forgotten lore ... and deny it to the twerps too small to see is magnificence at Candlekeep.
To regain his reputation, mostly to spite his detractors.
Personality:
Hugo is pompous, touchy, a glamour hound, & not terribly pleasant to most people. Once he decides someone is “useful“ then he will treat them as his peer. By useful, he means to the world not necessarily himself.
Hugo has little patience for frauds, cheats and swindlers. They are the most likely to get his ire up.
Hugo is more than a bit of a hothead, and will likely need his party members to calm him down.
Complications:
Hugo tends to over estimate his intelligence, even though it is considerable (16) which can definitely get him into situations that he should’ve avoided.
He is also a very good written communicator, he has a clip and understandable style, yet social interactions beyond bullying are not his strong suit.
Most of the time it is not suitable for people to know that a deed has been done, rather that Hugo did the deed. He will never take credit for anything he did not do, for there is a special place in hell for plagiarists.
