K. Roscoe d’Jorasco
Male Halfling, 37 years old. Celestial Warlock 3, tome.
In the Shadow of Greatness
Keoghtom Roscoe d’Jorasco is a Sharn native growing up in Upper Menthis. Named for his grandfather, Keoghtom d’Jorasco. That Keoghtom. The one who invented the miraculous ointment which saved countless lives in the Last War. Roscoe (only his mother, Lourdes, calls him Keoghtom) was a bright student and he endeavored to study all he could about the working of his mark, Dragonmarks in general, and he even dabbled in the Draconic Prophecy, but he did not get the chance to delve too deeply, because his medical studies came first. As good as he is, Roscoe could never measure up to his namesake. This made him bitter, sarcastic, and apathetic. This lasted until it was time for him to put his skills to work.
The War Years
Roscoe was in a hospital near the Droaamite border, Fort Troll’s Breath, where he became an expert at tending the wounds inflected by all sorts of monsters. Working 12-16 hour shifts for years, Roscoe became an expert surgeon. Roscoe made many good friends among the officers of Fort Troll’s Breath, he also discovered a passion for healing people. Saving lives became a passion, but so has living life to the fullest, as it is so cheap.
The Day of Mourning
When the Sivis courier came into the operating theater announced that Cyre was gone, it was like the world stopped. Roscoe was glued to the dispatches for two days without sleep. The list of names, not just the dead, but the missing. Families who would never see mother, father, brother, sisters, wives, husbands, and children ever again. This cemented a commitment to life in Rsocoe. To take a life is serious, deadly so, and should not be undertaken lightly, and those who kill without compunction are the truest expression of evil.
The Post War Years
After the Day of Mourning the fighting died down. With less fighting, there was less call for a healer and six months before the treaty of Thronehold, Roscoe was sent home. When he got home he was surprised to find out that he was engaged to Belladonna Boromar. Donna is a wealthy woman with the Boromar clan, she runs a small crew of criminals in Lower Dura. Soon after the wedding Roscoe was set up with a small shop in Westbridge, Callestan. He was theoretically open to all needing healing, but the residents of Lower Dura can rarely afford the House Jorasco rates, and it was understood that he was there for the convenience of the Boromar clan. He was given a staff as well, if you consider Master Cutler, a warforged envoy with integrated surgery tools, a staff.
Roscoe has been running his clinic for about a year and a half, and it keeps him busy but not too busy, as Master Cutler is quite capable himself. He is a bit of a fixture in Callestan, especially at the Silvermist Theater, unlike many others, though, he is there for the show.
NPCs
Belladonna Boromar – Wife. Criminal. Youngest sister of Ilsa Boromar. Roscoe and Donna are fond of one another, but Roscoe is reasonably sure that his wife has a lover or two on the side. Roscoe is afraid of having anyone on the side, as it could be considered a slight on the Boromar family and can earn him a mountain of trouble. Currently her group of sneak thieves and leg breakers consists of Toby Knuckles (Half Orc), Fat Jozan, Skinny Jozan (both human) and Scrapheap (a warforged juggernaut who has been repaired numerous times). This is a DNPC who I see as frequently occurring.
Master Cultler – Partner. Warforged. Master Culter served for the Berlish army in the war as a tireless surgeon. On the Day of Mourning he was on the Cyran border and as the mist erupted he heard the voice of the living forge and its apostle, the Lord of Blades. This is an NPC who as I see as an enemy in the 2nd or 3rd tier.
Lt. Corwyn Mace – Half-elf. Dark Lantern. A friend from the war, he was an officer at Ft. Troll’s Breath and he and Roscoe were frequent drinking buddies and confidants. Since the war Corwyn has been working with the King’s Dark Lanterns and has been tasked with building a case against the Boromar clan and reducing their political influence among the Sixty Families. He is currently trying to exploit his relationship with Roscoe, but also trying to shield Roscoe from the brunt of the investigation. I see this NPC as a 1st and 2nd tier adversary.
Diraz d'Jorasco -Halfling, cousin. Diraz runs the House Jorasco Clinic in Deathsgate and is a wannabe political mover and shaker in the house. He is also ruthless, callous and superior. He was angling to marry Belladonna and holds a burning grudge against Roscoe, convinced that it was the connection to the great Keoghtom and nothing more that led to Roscoe usurping his place in the family. He is a very accomplished alchemist and herbalist, but if rumors are to be believed he is also someone to see about poisons. He has a group of 'resurrection men' who work for him and they make an effective little ring of ner'do-wells. He is quoted in the book Dragonmarked as saying "Time alone will not heal your friend. I would very much like to help him, but am bound by my oath. Do you wish to pay now, or shall we wait and see if the wasting curse ravages his form further?" . I see this character as a running rival in House Politics who could be involved in all sorts of nefarious plots. He is also someone who Roscoe cannot outright kill, or even allow to die, as he is family after all.
NB: Resurrection Men is a 18th and 19th century term to describe people who steal corpses for medical students and others who want them. A most unsavory profession.
Other Plot Hooks
Duty to House Jorasco/The Boromar Clan – being tied to both of entities, Roscoe can be asked to do a great many things. If Roscoe gets wind of a threat to either of these organizations he will work to preserve them.
Saved the wrong life – Roscoe is a healer, and he walks that walk too. This can come into play, if someone is dying in an alley, Roscoe will investigate and probably step in. Even the most bloodthirsty gnoll needs a chance.
The Secret Laboratory of Keoghtom d’Jorasco – nearly mythical in what it may contain, Roscoe see this as a great opportunity for a huge leap in prestige in the house.
Themes I would like to explore with this character
Gangland politics and Drangonmarked house politics are nearly the same.
Are you really a good guy, if you don’t have to make hard choices to be good?
Privilege is a pernicious thing and people are often blind to their own advantages.
