Cypher Richards, now 32, was born to mercenary parents in a supply wagon as it was rolling out of Sharn on the way to yet another campaign.
Wolfhar Richards, his father, was a brutal mercenary Sergeant who cared only that his troops followed orders and killed or died in battle. He had little use for the wounded who died in a bed after the battle was finished.
Elan Richards, his mother, also a mercenary Sergeant, often in charge of procuring supplies, didn’t care how badly the countryside was ravaged in the effort to supply the troops.
Cypher had 5 siblings, four brothers and a sister. Each died in various campaigns before reaching the age of 25.
While in training to fight with the Red Wolf Company, Cypher held his parents and siblings in disdain for the way they carelessly tore up the countryside as they passed through. While the Company was attached to a brigade of the Sharn defense forces, a Paladin named Conrad Portman who had taken the Oath of the Ancients noticed Cypher’s leanings toward protecting the land rather than carelessly destroying it, took him under his wing and began to train him to be a paladin rather than a mercenary. Wolfhar grew angry at this as he viewed Cypher as his property to be raised and trained as he saw fit, but dared not cross someone as powerful as the paladin.
After that campaign, Cypher broke with his parents and stayed with the paladin to continue his training. From then on he fought with the forces at Fort Troll’s Breath instead of the Red Wolf Company. His father never forgave Cypher or Conrad Portman and hates both to this day. Elan was happy that Cypher had wound up where he could be happy, but never crossed her husband outright.
While at Fort Troll’s Breath, Cypher made the acquaintance of K. Roscoe d'Jorasco, a healer with a similar outlook on life - living it to the fullest and helping those he could.
On the Day of Mourning, Cypher, like everyone else, was crushed by the horrendous destruction and loss.
Since the day of Mourning Cypher as been working to try to convince people to rebuild and protect the natural resources around them, including each other. He tries to be a shining beacon of light shining out against the gathering shadows.
Though he was raised on the road during campaigns, Cypher has always considered Sharn to be his home base and will always return there.
