Taking a deep breath, we entered the final chamber. As we stepped inside, we found ourselves in a huge chamber. Inside this dark echoing chamber, we saw the shapes of fifty foot high undead giants. As they turned and charged us, Sunny banished one of them. Kelric turned one of them to dust and the other two were dispatched. Sunny let her concentration go, popping the fourth one back and we took that one down as well.
We were now standing before the final Black Gate. Opening the gate, we stepped into a demi-plane. Under a blood-red sky, we found ourselves standing on a floor of skulls. In the middle stood a black basalt pyramid. It was at this time, the priestess of Loviatar snapped, grabbed and stabbed the halfling bard before turning to confront us. Sunny was busy sending a message to Myla, the Red Wizard, that we had entered the Doom Vault when the halfling fell. Everyone piled onto the priestess of Loviatar while Sunny saved the halfling’s life.
We entered the halls of the black basalt pyramid. Kelric bore the Lantern of Revealing to expose any hidden foes. The hallway ended in a large chamber lined with gargoyles. There were three exits. Elathrion’s dancing lights cantrip revealed that each of them went 100 feet and ended in a set of double doors. As we turned to enter the first exit, the gargoyles sprung to attack.
Having smashed our attacks into rubble, we stood before the bronze double doors. Randall examined them carefully before telling us that they were trapped and fake. The second exit’s doors were not trapped but they were arcane-locked. Kelric used a scroll to open them. The door slid open to reveal a large room with shelves upon shelves of items. This were the phylacteries we had been searching for. But the phylacteries were guarded by a flaming skull with gems for eyes and teeth. It howled and a sense of killing fear washed over us. The spell had no effect because we were in the company of a paladin.
While the others fought the skull with magic weapons and spells, Sunny focused on buffing the others. When the skull was destroyed, the pyramid gave a groan and shuddered. We swept up the phylacteries and escaped the pyramid as it began to collapse.
Once outside, we watched as the pyramid condensed down to a glowing black sphere. Randall, Kelric and the others recognized it as a Sphere of Annihilation. Seizing the moment, we tossed the various items we had looted from the pyramid into the Sphere, utterly destroying them.
Sunny had used all her spells so it was lucky that Kelric still had a Scroll of Teleport Circle. He used it to escape Thay and bring us all to Baldur’s Gate.
In the succeeding months. We started to hear rumors of a war in Thay. The local enclave of Red Wizards left the city to join the forces in Thay. Sunny was happy – she could now nap in the sun in the Elfsong Tavern, responsible only for replacing the Scroll of Teleport Circle.
Then some merchants showed up. They had a problem in Phlan, near the Moonsea.
