The Unicorn Club
Around 1740s, a small group of adventurers decided to relax at the Unicorn Inn at the corner of Pall Mall and Haymarket Street. They had just defeated an attempt by witch-doctors from Jamaica on the southeastern docks of London – an attempt to bring forth the damned souls through a gate to Hell to ravage England.
The Unicorn Inn was one of several inns along Haymarket Street, an old style inn with galleries, exterior stairways and rooms surrounding an open inn-yard. It served the farmers at the hay market with stabling for their horses, beds for the night and a common room for their food and drink. It offered private dining rooms for those that could afford it.
It was in one of these private dining rooms where the adventurers decided that they should form a club – a club to help those people that found themselves faced with problems beyond their normal capabilities. The Unicorn Club, named after the inn in which it was founded, would be open to all adventurers, giving them advice, support and help.
In 1789, the adjoining King’s Theater burned to the ground, leaving the Unicorn Inn badly damaged. The Unicorn Club decided to buy the Crown Lease from the owners of the inn, tore down the remains of the inn and constructed a new club house, facing Pall Mall. The club house was designed by Sir John Soane and built in the Neo-Classical style. A six story structure, the Unicorn Club offered a quiet place for adventurers to stay in London, fine meals in the Dining Room, a library for research and a Morning Room for adventurers to sit, watch the traffic on Pall Mall and a newspaper.
Prospective members must be sponsored by an existing member. Membership is open to all that have faced and overcome a danger from the Feywild or similar places. Dues are 5 guineas a year (10 gp, 5 sp) which covers the cost of the lodgings, meals and library. Player characters will be paid up members for start of the campaign.
Footnote: In our timeline, the site of the Unicorn Club was occupied by the Carlton Hotel. It was destroyed by bombing in 1941 and later replaced by the New Zealand House – a ugly square glass tower, home to the New Zealand embassy.
