Having arrived in Scardos’ camp and checked in with Captain Milani, we moved over to our assigned camping spot and began setting up camp. Dunkin used the opportunity to talk to other camp followers and connect with other Pelor worshipers. From our spot, we watched as more people went into Scardos’ large pavilion and not come out. Often, they were organized groups, carrying their arms, armor and a backpack of equipment.
It was puzzling. We speculated as what might be in the pavilion – Jovian had a teleport circle to bring the troops elsewhere? Scardos was collecting armed men and having them all killed for Iuz? Or was he moving his soldiers into the mirror – which contained a pocket dimension? Discussions were held as to our next step.
From chats we’ve had with neighboring warriors of Scardos, we learned about an Iuz commander in the area that was hunting down men trying to make it to Scardos’s forces. The commander was a hobgoblin cleric known as Gornock the Unstoppable. He commanded various bands of hobgoblins in the area, Gornock the Unstoppable was accompanied by an actual flaming skull that was rumored to spit fireballs. Gornock the Unstoppable and his hobgoblins were known as the Flaming Skulls. If we were able to take out Gornock, our reputation with Scardos would grow.
We approached Captain Milani with our idea. She agreed to let us go on detached duty and we returned to our camping site to pack for the coming expedition. As we were striking our tent, Scardos and a few of his lieutenants came by. There was something about the man that seemed familiar to Aerwyn but she could not put a finger on it.
After Scardos left, having wished us luck on our journey to defeat Garnock, Dunkin spoke up. Pulling an old Nyrond coin from his pocket, he said that Scardos resembled the figure on the coin – the previous king of Nyrond, King Archibald. Dunkin added that there had been rumors that there was a bastard brother to the previous king.
Going on Captain Milani’s information, it would take us a few days to reach the location of one of the hobgoblin attacks. The first day’s travel was uneventful and so we set up camp. In the middle of preparations, Gideon warned us that something was coming, something large in numbers being driven forward.
From under the shadows of trees, a large number of zombies came shuffling toward us. Gideon used Plant Growth to cause the meadow’s plants to ensnare the oncoming crowd. Aerwyn threw her first fireball in their midst. In the flash of the explosion, more zombies were revealed in the darkness of the trees. Another fireball thinned down their numbers. From behind us, six more undead rushed among us, their eyes glowing with a blue-whitish glow. Dunkin channeled divinity to force them to turn away. It destroyed the remaining zombies and caused some of the wights to flee. Gideon – in the form of an allosaurus and Sir Thabo finished off the surviving wights.
The zombies had no loot but the wights carried Iuz symbols. We decided to move camp to a spot free of the stench of undead.
In the second camp, we had barely settled down when Dunkin and Wolfram’s first watch was interrupted by a pair of trolls. Between Aerwyn and Sathy’s fire spells and Gideon, Sir Thabo and Wolfram attacks, we finally dropped them. Rather than move camp once again, Gideon used the Move Earth spell to bury our attackers.
