In the Depths of the City
Having defeated the lizard folk in the console room, we had a chance to catch our breath and look around. In addition to the dead lizard folk on the dissecting table, there were several other tables with colored and glowing crystals on them. The room also had several exits – one in the center of the back wall and two on the left and right walls. Checking the side passages, we found various chambers, some workrooms, others sleeping quarters and all long deserted.
The door in the center of the back wall opened to stairs leading further down. The corridor ended in a pair of ornate double doors. Marissa checked the doors for traps before opening them. The doors led to a large chamber, lit with gently glowing crystals. The crystals were arrayed around crystal statues. There were lizard folk, serpent men and dinosaur statues, each surrounded by a circle of indents at their base. While we were examining the statues, several large lizard folk entered the room, accompanied by a serpent man with a bow.
After a bit of a struggle, we took them down. One of them had an Amulet of Health which Marissa pocketed.
Our eyes were drawn to a repeated flashing at the back of the room. At the back of the room, we found a glowing pipe of light. The pulsing pipe of light left the room here, next to a door. Opening the door, we stood before a short ramp leading down to a dirt-floored tunnel. The pipe of light was mounted along the tunnel, heading deeper into the ground. There was another dirt tunnel splitting off but we followed the pipe of light.
The tunnel ended in a larger chamber, lit by a glowing pit of lava. The pulsing pipe of light turned and ended in the lava. It appeared that energy was being siphoned from the lava pit by the pipe of light. There was another console table nearby with glowing crystals. Devon discovered that by removing the crystals, he could control or shut off the flow of energy.
Antor reported that something or someone was coming – probably to find out why their power kept flickering on and off. A large lizard folk warrior, armed with a spiked crystal chain, came into the room, followed by a bone naga. Seeing us, they attacked.
We beat them but it took all of our remaining reserves. Since we had heard bad things about bone naga being unkillable – we rolled the bone naga into the lava pit. Then we retreated up the tunnel. Heading down the other dirt tunnel, we ran across eight more lizard folk. It was a struggle but we killed them. It was decided that we would take no more chances and retire before we were overwhelmed. So we retreated upstairs to the smaller building with the incubation chambers and take a rest.
