NYR08 – Return to the Wrong Temple of Evil
Aerwyn downed five potions of healing before turning in; tomorrow, we were going to clear out that temple of Nerull, clean ourselves up and be present when we are to be presented to the king of Nyrond in the evening. She did not sleep well.
When we showed up at the Vineyards, bright and early the next morning, the guards informed us that no one tried to get in or out. It was all very quiet. Kerwin walked over to the fat man statue, pressed the hidden catches and let us all in.
We descended down into the depths until we were standing in front of the double doors leading to the sanctuary. After a short discussion, it was decided to search and clear the remainder of the corridors first before cracking the double doors.
Returning to the corridor wrapped around the central sanctuary, we ended up at the red line painted on the floor – marking the limits of the undead patrols. The door to the immediate right was locked. It was also arcane locked. Gideon was forced to use stone shape to remove the door’s hinges.
Behind the door was a broad hallway ending in another door. In the hallway were two shield constructs and a Oaken Bolter. The ballista started throwing fireballs at us. Sir Thabo rushed the constructs. He pushed the constructs back and stopped the ballista. Then we finished off the shield constructs.
The second door was also locked and arcane locked. Gideon had to use another stone shape to bypass the lock. Now we could see that the corridor continued, descending downwards. Everything appeared to be dusty and unused.
Leaving the mystery of the descending broad corridor, we returned to the hallways around the temple. In various rooms, we turned up a fair amount of junk jewelry and coinage. Our explorations brought us full circle to the double doors of the sanctuary again.
The double doors were unlocked. We opened them to reveal a 30 by 30 foot chamber with a high ceiling. Everything was decorated with bones and skulls. As we entered the sanctuary, a sphere with multiple eye stalks descended from the high ceiling. Aerwyn panicked and threw spell after spell at the thing until it died. It was a dead beholder, a death tyrant.
Since there seemed to be no one in the chamber, we searched the sanctuary carefully. Sir Thabo found a hidden catch which opened a secret door to a hidden teleport circle. Aerwyn turned up a magic dagger. Saphy discovered a compartment which held a bone rod and a scroll.
While we were searching, Gideon disappeared. Then the altar began to shift and rock. Sir Thabo lifted the heavy altar off of its mount to reveal Gideon in a 5’ by 5’ shaft. “She’s down here,” he said. He pointed out the small holes in the wall which the vampire could use in mist form to enter her hidden lair.
We descend. The door at the bottom held us up only a moment as Saphy’s Shatter spells broke the door’s iron bars. As the door crashed to the floor, we found Lasindra busily packing things in her her bags. She turned and began casting spells at us.
We fired back. Lasindra ran up and across the ceiling, dropping down behind us. Sir Thabo whirled around and used a Smite on her. She answered by casting Cone of Cold on us. Aerwyn, hurting, hit her with a acid orb. Lasindra turned again and tried to grab Dunkin – his radiant spells were really damaging to her. She had to drop him under Sir Thabo’s unrelenting attacks. She finally tried to escape up the 5’ by 5’ shaft but Sir Thabo used his Misty Step spell to get ahead of her. Then he used Smite again, forcing her into her Mist Form and retreat to her coffin.
Since her coffin was in the same rooms, it was easy to finish her off. Unfortunately, Gideon was turned to stone so we had to drag him from the Vineyards to a priest to remove the petrification. Luckily, the priest of Wastri owed him a favor so we were able to recover our druid friend.
Returning to the palace, we started getting ready for our presentation in the Winter Court. Aerwyn put on her courier’s clothes and cast Mage Armor. At the right time, we entered the Great Hall and were seated at the second table – along those receiving honors from the king. As we are called up, we are inducted in to the Order of the Golden Torc. A golden torc was given to us to mark as members. In addition, we are to have portraits painted and placed in the Torc Chapterhouse in Rel Mord. As members of the order, we can use the chapterhouse as a place to stay while in Rel Mord.
Congratulating us for entering the Order of the Golden Torc are fellow members of the order, Oscar Steenson and Olaf Eglson, the son and son-in-law of Arn Steenson, the priest of Wastri.
