Across the Jungle
In the morning, Varia Knightree informs us that it will take another day and half to travel across the rough terrain to arrive at the serpent city ruins. We broke camp and set out in a light drizzle. Our journey was interrupted only once; we spotted a group of frog folk crossing our trail. As evening fell, Talos and Three Rivers found us another place to camp.
Setting out early in the morning the next day, we arrived on a hilltop overlooking a vast field of ruined buildings. Varia pointed out a tall structure in the center of ruins. She lost her mask somewhere in or around that building. Then a group of winged dinosaurs launched themselves from a nearby structure and hurled themselves at us. We knocked them down and began our descend into the abandoned city.
As we approached the massive building that Varia pointed out, we were attacked by a number of degenerate serpent men. After killing them, Devon raised several of them as skeletons. Getting closer to the plaza before the building, we noticed three allosaurs guarding the building entrance. Talos distracted them with a well contrusted illusion and we quickly sneaked inside.
Inside the building – or temple as Varia called it – we found the walls decorated with bas-relief of lizard folk and serpent men worshiping naga. The naga depictions had been damaged. We descended down a long sloping corridor to a central chamber. Inside the chamber, there was an altar with two broken naga statues and a newer serpent man statue. The serpent man figure still had gems for eyes.
Varia led us over to a corridor. Last time she was here, she had escaped through this way. We started to follow her in to the corridor before deciding to explore the doors to the left and right of us. The rooms off the corridor were not empty – they had undead serpent men in them. From one serpent man priest’s corpse, we found a Lyre of Yig, Bracers of Defense and an Amulet of Nondetection. From the former priest’s room, we recovered several books on the worship of Yig and a diary describing a method by which one could stop the process by which naga return from the dead.
We had accomplished what we had come for. We still needed to recover Varia’s mask. She pointed down the hallway and told us that she had lost it deeper in the temple. As we proceeded along the hallway and down the stairway, she described a chamber much like the dinosaur control room we had already seen earlier. The stairway descended deep into the ground. Our descent was interrupted by a group of degenerate serpent men that tried to stop us. We killed them and moved on.
