The Day of the Ixitxachitl
Having returned from the destruction of the Sahuagin temple, we found ourselves resting in the former pirate base. It’ll take another day to finish setting up the rigging on the damaged ship so we have plenty of time. Tessa was napping in the shade of one of the huts set up on the beach when she hears a shout. Talos and some of the others have spotted a group of humanoids swimming in from the sea. Three Rivers cast Plant Growth on a kelp bed while Devon’s quasit flew out over the waters to have a closer look.
They turned out to be sea elves, looking to talk to the people that raided the Sahuagin temple; they wanted to know if we had found any sea elf prisoners. The sea elf we had rescued from the Sahuagin temple, Brixton, came up and recognized them. He did note that it was odd that the sea elves were wearing kelp capes as this was not a common practice among the sea elves – the capes would slow them down in the water and get caught on the coral and rocks.
Once we had gathered on the beach, Olass, the leader of the sea elf patrol greeted Brixton. Then, he offered all of us a drink in celebration of Brixton’s safe return. Three Rivers quietly cast Purify Food and Drink to remove any impurities including poison. Tessa, not liking the fish sauce taste, used Prestidigitation to neutralize the flavor. Olass tried to hide his displeasure but Talos caught his reaction. Brixton, in the meantime, tried to renew his relationship with one of the sea elves but she was strangely remote and disinterested. When Talos quietly wondered if Olass was seriously trying something with his fish sauce alcohol, Brixton replied that the six sea elves each had a small starfish attached to their bodies, often used by the sea elves as an antitoxin.
Devon sent his familiar out over the open waters. The quasit reported back that there were dark manta-like rays - Ixitxachitl – swimming in the depths, about three hundred feet from the shore. At this time, Marissa decided to remove one of the sea elves’ kelp capes. She used the opportunity to get up, walk past the target sea elf and loosen the cape when she stumbled. The kelp cape fell, revealing a small Ixitxachitl embedded in the spine of the sea elf. Then everything broke loose.
It was a short and dirty fight but we took them all down. Before Tessa could examine one of the possessed sea elves, one of the off shore Ixitxachitl began to move. Flying above the water, it directed a telepathic command at Devon to come to it, bearing the staff we looted from the Sahuagin temple. Devon resisted the command and Tessa burned it with her Fireball. The sea elves had also targeted Devon in their fight. The dead Ixitxachitl was dragged onto the beach. Tessa’s examination of the embedded Ixitxachitl showed that the sea elves were long gone – their Ixitxachitl master wore them as a puppet.
The next day, we set sail with the newly repaired ship. The canoes had been hoisted onto the deck and stowed, the lizard folk loaded and led below decks and Marissa and Devon given command. Talos and Three Rivers accompanied the ship in the bathyscaphe.
The remaining Ixitxachitl tried to hinder us but Talos and Three Rivers were able to kill them with the assistance of a pleisosaurus that Three Rivers befriended. The next day, we arrived at Tanaroa. The anchorage was a bit small for the large ship so we anchored it out in the bay. Brixton then took his leave, saying that he needed to check on his village. We were finally home – on this island, at least.
