Uncovering a Hidden Informant
We spent the few days until our ‘valuable’ cargo of ‘brandy’ left with the caravan wagons, waiting and watching Ingo’s house and barns for any signs of communication between Rodna and whoever was giving him information. Nothing turned up.
On the morning of the caravan’s departure, we followed at a discreet distance. Everything seemed normal until we heard a commotion from the two wagons ahead. Rissa made out more – growling dogs and a voice demanding the caravan surrender their goods.
We rushed up to the wagons. At the holdup, we found several bowmen threatening the drovers while a tiefling and two more bandits blocked the road with their large mastiffs. We had tried to be quiet in our final approach but they heard us coming. The fight started.
Rebus put a number of their ranged fighters to sleep. Einor and Rissa went after the bandits and their dogs while Rebus kept the tiefling busy. It ended with several dead bandits, two prisoners and and their tiefling captured.
Questioning our prisoners revealed they had an abandoned wood elf place as a forward outpost, There were four more bandits there. Morphos, the tiefling, used a sending stone to talk to an informant in Ingo’s business. That’s how Rodna knew which caravans to hit. The informant was a clerk in Ingo’s booking office, a small red-headed lad called Lucian.
Further questioning told us about Rodna’s base in the Dreadwood – an ancient barrow deeper in the woods. Rodna kept his prisoners from the caravans there before selling them south to the slavers.
Before we returned to Saltmarsh, we decided to clear the wood elf outpost. We were much more quiet in sneaking up to the place so we surprised the four bandits in their rest. Killing them and looting the place, we found Morphos’ sending stone.
Back on the road returning to Saltmarsh, we made the caravan drovers wait outside of town. That way, we could unmask Lucian in Ingo’s office without him running off. We got to Ingo’s office, explained to Ingo what we had discovered, went to the offices and took Lucian into custody. In his pockets, we found the other half of Morphos’ sending stone.
The whole lot was turned over to Fireborn for justice. We also told him about the barrow. The rest of the day was devoted to preparations for our trip into the Dreadwood. Rissa took it easy while the others did some shopping. Einor visited the local grove of the druids of Obad-hai and learned of another quest.
They want someone to enter the Dreadwood and deal with a patch of blight that has recently shown up. They have stories about abominations appearing along with hostile plants and trees.
