Inside the Burrow
The next day, we head out into the outer fringes of the Dreadwood, following the stream towards to the remains of the burrow. As we’re traveling along the banks of the shallow stream, Rissa spots someone in a tree watching us. We decide to ignore him and continue on our way. Another person was hiding in the bushes further on. More men emerge out of hiding and challenge us. Their leader was a woman, Reyna, and they are the King’s Rangers.
Einar began talking to their leader, probing at their story. He’s unsure. Einar mentions that some of the bandits they are looking for have been captured. Reyna seemed unset at the news. As they prepared to leave, one of her men mentioned their reward. Reyna quickly says it’s the reward for capturing the bandits.
Coming up on the way station that stood about halfway between Saltmarsh and the burrow, Rissa was sent to scout ahead. She found a log cabin alongside a stream with two men outside. But they heard her approach so they challenged her. Quickly, everyone else ran up to aid her. Rebus put most of them to sleep and the rest were quickly dispatched. One of the survivors told us that while most of the remaining bandits are at the burrow, one of them, Sarah, is in Saltmarsh. We left the survivors tied up in the root cellar, buried the dead and prepared to camp for the night.
The next morning, we continued our way to the burrow. Our travels were interrupted only by an attack from a ghoul and his skeletons. When we had defeated the undead, we found a bag of holding on the ghoul. Inside, among other items, we found material for spellcrafting like shoes of a dead thief, wood of an ancient tree, stuck by lightning and a letter from Granny Nightshade to Keldric of Saltmarsh.
Around noon, we ran into the bandits’ guards. By taking them out, we were able to enter the ravine where the burrow lay. There were several bandits walking around, a corral of horses, several tents, and a wagon. Rissa used the hat of disguise she’d gotten from the bag of holding to get closer. The bandits in the tents would not be a problem yet but those outside had be taken out quickly lest they give the alarm.
Having dispatched anyone outside, we enter the burrow. We descended down a long tunnel until we found a chamber with a several exits. The first way was blocked with rocks, leaving only a small airhole. The next way led to a chamber with a plank door. Behind the door was the bandits’ loot – stacks of barrels, boxes and other trade goods. The third way led to a large chamber from which we could hear voices. One of the voices was talking about the tiefling carrying money to the King’s Rangers. We turned the corner to find Rodna and one of his lieutenants talking. Then we attacked and killed them.
In searching for the missing drovers, we remembered the blocked passageway. Removing the rocks, we found four drovers happy to see us. Then we went back to the camp at the mouth of the burrow, surprised the remaining bandits by dropping their tents on top of them and killing them. The wagon was hitched to the horses, the trade goods and loot loaded onto the wagon and we made our way back to Saltmarsh.
