The Beast of Crabber’s Cove
With the smuggler’s ship coming in two weeks, we had some time to deal with a few other problems. After discussing it over a meal, we decided to look into the Beast of Crabber’s Cove. Crabber’s Cove was a poor abandoned area north of Saltmarsh, currently visited only by the homeless and crab boys that came to collect the crabs washed up by the tides.
Rissa went with the others after lunch. We wandered the area until we found some crab boys spearfishing. They told us that they had not seen the Beast of Crabber’s Cove but warned us against going near the abandoned buildings, especially a two story structure nearby. Einar paid them a few coins but Revandrous was more generous, paying them to stick around to run messages.
The two story house was our first target. Upon approaching the building, Einar determined that there was someone lurking inside. He reached through a shuttered window and yanked the lurker through the shutters. Revandrous threw a sleep spell through the broken shutters and more bodies hit the floor. One by one, we jumped through the window inside and took out any remaining opponents.
It turns out they were a petty street gang calling themselves the River Eels. They survived by shaking down the crab boys and stealing from the warehouses in Saltmarsh. Before we sent them to Elisander Fireborn, the captain of the guard, we questioned them about the Beast of Crabber’s Cove. One of the gang members reported he had seen the thing – it was a giant crab and it appeared suddenly out of nowhere. It then grabbed a homeless person and disappeared. Further asking turned up the information that the homeless in the area gathered at the old smithy.
After returning from Fireborn’s guardhouse, we headed down to the old smithy. We found a substantial building, open on third sides and covering an old forge. Various homeless people had already made their camp there for the night. Asking them about the Beast of Crabber’s Cove, they confirmed that it was a giant crab but added that it had appeared a few days ago and grabbed Roscoe. And Roscoe was so proud of the fact that he had recently come across a real treasure map.
We kindly suggested that they move a short distance to the two story home since we had cleared it of the street gang. When they left, we made ourselves comfortable and kept watch.
Suddenly, a giant blue-striped crab appeared behind Rissa. It’s claws snapped at her as smaller juvenile crabs on it’s back began to swarm her. Einar and the others jumped and began to hit back. Revandrous launched an acid spell, covering it’s back and killing the juvenile crab swarm. The giant blue crab stepped back and disappeared. Revandrous continued to concentrate on his acid spell.
We could track the Beast’s movements as it retreated, scraping against buildings in an attempt to remove the acid. Finally, the ruckus stopped as the giant crab died. We found the Beast of Crabber’s Cove dead, acid still eating into it’s carapace. There was stuff still glued to the crab’s shell – coins and a magical medallion. Following it’s tracks, we found the giant crab’s lair under a cliff. Among other things, there was a treasure map in a scroll case.
We returned to Fishborn’s guard post to report the death of the Beast of Crabber’s Cove. Einar moved his shrine to Kord to the old smithy, using the area in front of the forge as a wrestling ring. The shell of the giant crab was set up as a trophy. Connor used the meat from the crabs and made a stew for everyone in the area.
