Rinaldo’s New Friend
Shaken, Rinaldo returned to the inn where the rest of us had been relaxing – he was attacked in the marketplace by a spell caster and when Rinaldo gave chase, the opponent had gone invisible. Inga suggested that since Bryn Shander is so isolated and winter made travel risky, there was a good chance that the assassin was still in town. We need to make a tour of the inns and taverns and ask if anyone has recently arrived.
At the town’s major tavern, the newcomers were a group from Dougan’s Hole and a man from Bremen way. The group from Dougan’s Hole, we eliminated right away; they were heavily inbred in that town and any stranger would stand out. The man from Bremen claimed he was recruiting workers to clear the ice on the trail to Bremen. We sat down at his table and began poking at his story. The discussion went nowhere – he was a most unpleasant man. Finally he got up and began to make his way to the door.
Rinaldo recognized him by his gait and we quickly went to follow him. He tries to flee, even turning invisible but we finally brought him down. It is decided to take him to the mage’s tower where Melandrian had some prison cells.
In questioning him, we learn that he was an assassin for the Arcane Brotherhood out of Luskan. The Arcane Brotherhood wants Rinaldo dead because he is supposed to have some blood relationship with the previous ruler of Neverwinter or something. Inga stopped listening at that point.
Under a Zone of Truth spell, we find out if he is truly willing to lie that he killed Rinaldo. Then we return most of his stuff. He is willing to be our contact with the Arcane Brotherhood and provide us with access to the Brotherhood’s library. When we need him, we need to leave word for Simon at the Drunken Eel Tavern in Neverwinter – or his house in Luskan.
