Mundus Arcanus Modernus Character Creation Guidelines - posted for Ken, this is a work-in-progress and may see more updates and refinements in the future.
Chronicle Standards
• Characters are built on 125 base points plus up to 50 points in complications.
• Characters may buy Characteristics, Talents, Perks and Skills.
• Characters may not buy powers without permission of the GM.
Characteristics
• Speed, End and Recovery are dormant characteristics. You may not buy them or sell them back.
• Normal Characteristics Maxima are in effect.
• Remember that the average of 10 in Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence, Ego and Presence is a heroic average. The average schmuck on the street likely has an 8 in most of these characteristics.
• Characteristics may not be bought after play begins except with special circumstances brought about based on the story.
Talents
• Check with the GM first, but most talents should be okay.
• Remember that magic requires the mage talent which can be found in the Codex Arcanus.
Perks
• Check with the GM before purchasing Perks, especially status.
• There is no restriction on wealth, but points in wealth will not allow a character to have unlimited consumable magic items.
Skills
• Skills are encouraged.
• Don’t forget Everyman skills for the modern character. And remember that these skills cost full points if bought above the everyman level.
• Remember that each spell is its own skill.
• Remember that Mages speak Latina Magiana among themselves, but you get only one language for free. Latina Magiana is close enough to classical Latin for speakers of one to speak the other at -1 level of proficiency.
Powers
• Characters may not buy powers without explicit permission from the GM.
• Spells are not powers; they are skills.
• Enhanced abilities based on character race are allowed. Check with the GM first.
Complications
• You are not required to have complications, but your character is built on 125 points plus up to 50 points from complications.
• Speak to the GM about the distinctive feature, hunted, rival and social complication. Any choice must fit the setting. You and the GM can work out the details together.
• You may have more than 50 points in complications, but only 50 of them add into your character’s point total.
Experience Points Awarded
• Expect 1 xp per playing session plus 1 xp per milestone (determined by the GM).
• A player can earn 1 xp if a complication arises that hampers the characters effectiveness or the characters ability to participate fully in the session and the player role-plays the situation well. This is determined by the GM in consultation with the player. Having a hunted, a DNPC, or rival appear in a session does not count unless the hunted, DNPC, or rival has a detrimental effect on the characters performance.
