Death from Above
Upon landing the Spelljammer in Bryn Shander, we discovered that someone had decorated the town’s mage tower with the entrails and bodies of our townsfolk. Gathering people together in the massive town hall meeting room, we learned that a red-headed man and his gang had sneaked into town, killed those that spoke against him and demanded that Bryn Shander turn us over to them for torture and execution. They called themselves the Sons of Malar. We made note of all those that did not attend the town meeting.
While most in Bryn Shander supported us, there were a few that helped the Sons of Malar. As a first step, we decided to purge the town of traitors. Our first stop was the four brothers working at the Blackened Blade smithy. When we got to the smithy, Melandrian started the questioning with a command to “SIT’. It turns out that all four brothers were were-wolves. We cut them down as soon as they shifted forms and attacked. In the smithy, we found a hidden triptych to Malar and his bride Auriel. (Auriel refuses to recognize Malar’s claim.) We also found a hidden map to a squat tower in the woods, a good 6-8 days’ travel north of Bryn Shander.
Inga spent the rest of the day with the Gnomish artificer that fixed our Spelljammer – he was asked to create a silver hand to replace the one she had lost in the glacier. Melandrian went with the others to talk to the guard at the gate that admitted the Sons of Malar. They learned that Grond, the guard, was threatened by the Flaxen sisters, a group of prostitutes working at the Foaming Mug. Going to the Foaming Mug, they confronted the sisters. Surprise – they were also were-wolves.
The baker and his apprentices also failed to attend the meeting. When Melandrian went to inquire why, they first claimed that they had to attend to the day’s baking. Then the baker went off on a rant before revealing himself to be the necromancer that we thought we had killed. Melandrian blew all the charges of his Ring of Ram to blast the necromancer’s body through the wall and into the street. After dispatching the apprentices – who were all were-wolves, of course – they searched the bakery. They turned up correspondence between the necromancer and a brother of the red-headed man, another red-head named Wyll. The warrior is waiting with his fellow Sons of Malar just outside of town in the woods.
After scrying the location of Wyll with Melandrian’s crystal ball, we took out the Spelljammer, flew over Wyll’s camp site, and dropped a 1000 feet down to him, using Featherfall to slow our descent.
Wyll never had a chance – we unleashed all our spells and items as we landed. With their leader dead, the rest of the Sons of Malar were easily wiped out.
Back at Bryn Shander, we started by scrying out the location of the squat tower. We would have to plan carefully to trap all the remaining Sons of Malar before destroying them utterly.
